Telepathic ways of knowing?

Asked by 1000oceans (178points) July 27th, 2009

Do you think when you think of someone and the feeling is so intense that they are thinking about you too? or at least can feel that you are thinking about them?

Do you think this is what makes someone suddenly pop into your head (because they miss you or were thinking about you)? Do you think when you get a weird feeling in your gut or a small bout of sadness and a certain person pops into your head they are missing you?

do you think it is possible for humans to speak telepathically, even from huge distances?

No. The phenomenon you describe is selection bias. Do you remember all the times you were thinking about someone and they didn’t call? No, you only remember the hits, not the misses.

I think it’s possible . . . I also think coincidence has something to do with it. Chances are, if you have close friends, you think of each other often anyway. Still . . .

The scientific portion of me recognizes and highly values that there have been absolutely no known demonstrated mental telepathic skills as you are describing, in fact in every single test they’ve done, the subjects score no more than random chance.

The portion of me that basis my knowledge on my experience also supports the thought that there are no such things as telepathic speaking or such other ESP abilities.

The rational portion of me also acknowledges that there is much scientific literature studying our brains and how it works, and it has observed that our brains love finding coincidences and patterns (such as seeing faces in the dark) and deeming them as important when they are really nothing beyond improbable.

I’ve had an experience you describe. I was thinking of my mom, so I picked up the phone to call her and started dialing. After a few beeps I heard a voice on the line and no dial tone, turns out it was my mom who had called me, but I had picked up before the phone registered! I could interpret this event as being mysterious or somehow telepathic, but in reality this has only occured once versus the thousands of times I’ve ever used the phone. My brain recognizes this as unique and may support a theory (in this case, of telepathic abilities) that really doesn’t exist.

all of these answers are amazing =D and realizing that the ones it happens with most are the ones whom you have things most in common with.

maybe the thinking pattern is the same?

Nope, I agree with @Ivan, it is simply selective memory. Sort of like that street light that flicks off when I drive under it every night on my way home form work. It’s not magic, or my presence, it is simply chance, or maybe the reflection of my headlights off of a parked car. Who knows? I’m sure its not some magical power. Just because you can’t explain something, that isn’t any reason to default to magic or fantasy.

“you only remember the hits, not the misses.”

Ivan, I think you forgot to quote that.
I wrote an essay about this Freshman year & used this quote.

I wasn’t trying to directly quote someone, but it doesn’t surprise me that someone would use that phrase.
