Melbourne suburbs compared to Sydney?

Asked by Brassman (112points) July 29th, 2009

I love living in Potts Point / Darlinghurst area of Sydney because of all the cafes, bars and restaurants; proximity to CBD; and the general look and feel of the place. I’m moving to Melbourne in January – can anyone suggest a comparitive area?

Cheers!

There are 17,000 cafes in the CBD of Melbourne, so make sure it’s somewhere closer to the city. I personally have lived in 30 different suburbs of Melbourne and I prefer the Eastern Suburbs. It really depends a lot on your budget but ‘Brunswick’ comes to mind! also Melbourne is a little different to Sydney in that over 7000 people live in the CDB, there are plenty of great places to live right in the middle of the action. If you are really cashed up you could rent at Docklands, most of the apartments are in the same building as the Bars/Restaurants/Cafes, just up stairs!

Here is a great link to a brochure of all of the little Lane ways of Melbourne, this is where the real culture of the city comes to life – and I hope you like Coffee, it’s almost compulsory for Melbournians to be addicted to the stuff ;-)

Here is a great Map of Melbourne and the surrounding areas, when you are in the CBD keep an eye out for people called the City Ambassadors (you can’t miss them they are in big red jackets, in the Bourke Street Mall) they know all of the best Cafes, and Bars and Events, etc etc – they can even point you to HalfTix to buy Half price tickets to everything.

I love Melbourne, I’ve been around the world three times and I keep coming back here, I work in the CBD and love it. I look forward to making you feel welcome with 3.5 million of my closest Melbournian friends – safe trip down!
