A Day of History in Philadelphia...

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) August 1st, 2009

My boyfriend is coming to visit me in New Jersey, and he’s never been out here. We’ve got NYC covered, but I don’t know Philadelphia as well. I need suggestions for historical things to do in Philly that don’t cost a ton of money. Help?

Here is a website that might be of some help. I am not sure of your budget.

run up the rocky steps. hours of fun. well maybe that was an exaggeration.

there is a really cool park in west(?) philadelphia called Clark Park. I believe theres a big farmers market there on saturdays and I just remember it overall being a cool place, but i haven’t been to it in years.

the old buildings in downtown are really neat too.

I personally recommend the Constitution Center.

I second the Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell is across the street…may seem boring, but it’s actually fun.
I live in Philly, but doing the historical touristy thing always brings back memories of childhood.
There’s also the Art Museum, which is not expensive and so worth it. You could spend hours upon hours there. Lots of great restaurants around there too. Oh! And my favorite park in Fairmount Park (it’s gigantic, and I only know certain parts well) is Lemon Hill Rd, right across the river from the Zoo. Absolutely gorgeous.

yes, the art museum is great and it is free on sundays. make sure you get your picture at the rocky statue. just make any donation if you’d like. the reading terminal market at 12th and market is also a great place to eat inexpensively and will give you a great taste of philadelphia as well as international foods! the constitution center is a great place and the surroundings sites make for a terrific day. have a nice time in this fabulous city!

This one is easy. You just walk on up to @eponymoushipster’s front door, rap on the door and ring the doorbell incessantly, and when he finally answers the door (which was not because of you directly…it was because his neighbors phoned him and threatened a monkey meat safari if he didn’t get you to knock off the racket) announce yourselves and tell him you guys are all his for a few days and you are both broke. Actually, that might not be a good idea as monkeys are prone to violence on imposers. However, should you see him for a short visit, which I would imagine could be quite lovely, if he should ask you to hold his banana, run!

Go down to Independence Mall. You can aslo go to the Betsy Ross house at Elsfreth’s Alley.

Once you do all the historical junk, go to South Street for fun and refreshment. They have great local draft beer at the Society Hill Hotel (if it’s still there).

Reading Terminal mnarket is fun for breakfast. The Wanamaker Organ (free concerts at noon).
