What to do when novocaine causes allergic reaction and cough?

Asked by roysters5 (64points) August 1st, 2009

I went to the dentist one week and a half ago and got 3 fillings. As soon as they gave me shots of novocaine, my cheeks imediatly swelled up and took days to go down, giving me a bad bruise. I also now have aquired a perty bad cough that is slowly going into my lungs. yikes!
also: I have to get my wisdom teeth out soon…
any ideas or tips of what to do and to get rid of this cough?

You should really call the dentist and ask if the cough could be caused by the novacaine or if it’s just a coincidence. Did you let them know about the bruising? You really need to let the dentist that is going to do your wisdom teeth know about the reaction you had. if it’s someone different, that is, I had to go to an oral surgeon for my wisdom teeth I have multiple drug allergies and get worried anytime I have to take a new medication. You can never be too careful. If you’re allergic to novacaine you could have a worse reaction the next time you get it or a different reaction. You really need to make sure and communicate with your dentist.

Make sure to carry some Benadryl or another anti-histamine with you. Anaphylactic shock sucks and you want to be prepared to slow it down in the worst case scenario when you need emergency treatment.

Even stronger than an anti-histamine (but only to be used if you’re feeling short of breath) is an EpiPen, which you can self-inject into your thigh. You can get your doctor or allergist to write a prescription for an EpiPen if you have a confirmed allergy.

As was said above, be sure to tell your dentist of the reaction. There are many other choices besides novacaine for local or of course they could give a general for the wisdom teeth extraction.

I don’t know about the cough, could be a coincidence that it came on you around the same time???

As alwalys the best way to found out a true allergy is get Allergy Testing. Many time there is a preservative in the bottle along with the medication and that causes allergies. Dentists (I hope) wear gloves, latex. Do not leave out the possibility of a Latex Allergy.
I agree with knitfroggy about informing the Dentist about the bruise.

Assuming it is the Novocaine and not latex as @Flo_Nightengale suggested, I would ask for general anesthesia for your wisdom teeth. That is what I had and I’m glad because I still have some sensation with Novocaine even though it isn’t pain. I would not have wanted to feel all of the pressure and yanking from getting those wisdom teeth out.
