Do you use RSS feeds or something equivalent?

Asked by erichw1504 (26448points) August 3rd, 2009

Do you currently subscribe to any RSS feeds? What are your favorite subscriptions? What application(s) do you use to read them? How often do you check them?

I love them and I use Google Reader now with 59 subscriptions. Instead of venturing out to each individual website, I can keep up-to-date right inside the reader. It also allows you to e-mail, share, save, and more.

Yup. I like Vienna and NetNewsWire for the feeds themselves, and I check them every time I get on the computer. Not necessarily read them, but always check them.

My favorite feeds are usually
The Onion
Lifehacker
Smoking Apples
Mashable
Autoblog
Gizmodo
Stereogum
Pitchfork
Videogum

Sorry. I’m a little too lazy to get links at the moment.

I use Google Reader, too. It’s really simple to figure out if you have a google account. I just use it to follow about 4 different webcomics. :)

+1 for Google Reader… I use it to follow about 125 different sites and blogs. Think of it as your own personal newspaper, that updates real time, with only stuff that you like. Plus the interface works decently on my iPhone. Finally, it also helps with sites/blogs that you find interesting but don’t update much. Instead of having to go out there everyday to see if there’s a new post… it just grabs it for you.

Here are some feeds that I follow:

digg.com – though watch out for this one, it’s not for the faint of heart… approx 135 articles a day

TV Squad
Lifehacker
Crooks and Liars
Mashable
Dear Old Love
Ain’t It Cool News
I-Am-Bored
White House.gov Blog
Gives Me Hope
Free Money Finance
Uploads from The Official White House Photostream

… to name just a few… =)

Another vote for Google Reader, although I also use the app ‘Feeds’ on my iPhone, which syncs nicely with GR so I can read my RSS feeds on the Underground or in meetings… :)

I use NewsFox 1.0 for Firefox, which is very easy to manage, but only for a few feeds:
Demonoid Music, Demonoid Apps and The Pirate Bay
Ted Talks
The Economist
Gizmodo and Engadget
Firefox Add-on Updates
Slashdot
Lifehacker
Listverse

That’s about it, except some odd ones like my school’s inter-library loan delivery list, and I Am Neurotic.

I use iGoogle and have programmed it for:
– NY Times
– Slashdot
– CNN
– 6 Dutch sites that you probably wouldn’t know anyway (voor de kenners: FD, ManagersOnline, Volkskrant, Het Parool, NRC en GeenStijl (LOL))
– CNN Money
– Wall Street Journal
– Wall Street Journal Europe
– New York Review of Books
Epicurious.com
– XKCD
– Intercultural Business Tool (from Kwintenssential.com)

There. That’s about as complete a picture of my personality as you’re ever gonna get.

I use the Brief extension for Firefox. I follow a ton of blogs—food and cooking blogs. photography and design blogs, sex blogs, normal blogs, funny blogs, technology blogs, science blogs, etc. Some of my favorites are:

Unreasonable Faith
smitten kitchen
Cracked
New Scientist
Lifehacker
Mashable
Ars Technica
XKCD

@samanthabarnum: I used to use Brief, but then I found Google Reader which I like a little better. It updates in real time and has a lot more options. If you plan on switching to Google Reader you can import all your feeds from Brief.

samanthabarnum's avatar

@erichw1504 Ah. I never tried it, I like having a notification in my Firefox without entrusting Google to everything in the universe of mine. Only like, 95%.

erichw1504's avatar

@samanthabarnum: If you keep a tab up for Google Reader it’ll say how many unread items are present. And you know Google will run your life in 10 years or so. At least your life on the web.

dpworkin's avatar

Thanks for suggesting Ars Technica, Epicurious, and The New York Review of Books. All really nice to have.

samanthabarnum's avatar

@erichw1504 Oh, keeping a tab up is too hard a work, I already keep a minimum of 4 tabs open full of stuff. :D

In addition to a lot of what was already listed: Metafilter.

I use Google reader when not using my laptop, Snackr to stream ticker style on my desktop when I am. GReader gives me easy syncing and access anywhere. Snackr reminds me to read them since they auto-launch on start-up and ticker on one part of your desktop.
Subscriptions mostly are from tech/geek/web stuff such as mashable, lifehacker and other gawker sites, gizmodo, crunchgear, mens health, etc. Also got some design blogs and trend sites like the cool hunter, make use of, smashing magazine, web urbanist, uncrate, etc.
