Possible job for a 69 year old retired teacher?

Asked by badapple (198points) August 5th, 2009

My father retired from teaching in the mid-90’s. To supplement his pension (and now, his social security), he took on a string of retail jobs including Store Manager, Inventory Manager, and Sales Associate.

The problem with his job now is that it is too physically demanding of a 69 year old man. He is on his feet all day and sometimes has to lift heavy materials.

I’m starting to look on various job sites for a new job for him, but I figured I would ask for suggestions first.

Here are the facts:
-Retired English Teacher (Degree in English & Master’s in History)
-Former Marine
-Hobbies include writing, photography, & home improvement.

Until my parents sell their home, he will need to make what he is making now which is around $2,000/month net.

Any ideas?

Special needs teaching?

He has started to look into teaching again but the big questions is whether or not he can keep his pension by doing so.

Special ed can be quite physically demanding, you’re always running around, on your feet

I was thinking about a private position. I don’t know what his specific pension issues are, but every community has those who need assistance, and your dad certainly has the skill set to do ameliorative work; that could be rewarding in more ways than just financially.

@pdworkin Very true, thanks. I’ll take a look into it. He used to be a psychiatric technician decades ago when he was still in college so it may renew some of his interests in helping others.

Wow, even better! Check Domestic Violence centers, Rape Crisis Hotlines, Child Abuse centers, etc.

Private tuition. Pays a lot.

What skills does he have that people will pay for? That’s the key issue here, not what jobs he’s held in the past.

There is always a call for people who can write coherently, although you have to do some sleuthing to find the jobs. If he enjoys teaching, he could look into private tutoring positions—there are private companies that do that to help students who are struggling in school, and community colleges with writing programs that need writing tutors.

I’m with the tutoring idea. We paid $30 an hour for tutor for my daughter, at one point.

How about being a teacher online? there are so many online schools now, and many of them hire people with master’s. It wouldn’t be as demanding for him.

Guardian of the local compost heap, if there is one? Bartender at a Vets bar, talk all day with people he has a connection with.
