Is there a way/program to take and edit screenshots quickly?

Asked by qualitycontrol (2573points) August 6th, 2009

I’m constantly needing to transfer images from on my screen to word documents so I take a screen shot and then paste it into paint and then cut out what I need and THEN paste it into word. Is there anything that does this in one swift step?

Snagit is amazing, but it isn’t freeware.

PrtScrn is another program, and it’s free. I’m just having trouble finding a link.

Both are great.

Skitch could work really well for you.

I’d recommend Snagit. It’s a nice little app.

Do you have a mac or PC? If mac, go with Skitch, if PC go with Snagit, if you can.

I have used SnagIt for years. It is perfect for you uses.

You can also get some ideas here: link there are lots of suggestions in the comments.

Jing is a nice product. It allows you to select any portion of the screen then you can either do a screencast or screenshot and save the result.

Also, it’s free!

EDIT: You can also do some drawing (lines, arrows, etc) on the image and then copy it to the clipboard so it is ready to paste into word or whatever.

at work I have a pc…I just downloaded Snagit and it’s incredible…everything I needed lol. Thanks for suggestion. Can’t believe I’ve never heard of this before! I’ll try jing when the free trial runs out on snagit. Thanks!

If the stuff you’re cutting out is an entire window, you can press Alt + print screen to capture just the active window.

On the Mac, there’s a program that comes with OS X called Grab. It’s in /Applications/Utilities.

If you have Vista it actually comes with a pretty amazing utility called “Snipping Tool”.

To enable it:

Go to Control Panel
Open Programs and Features
On the left hand side click on Turn Windows features on or off
Check Tablet PC Optional Components
Click OK

After it installs it will be located in your start menu under accessories. I like to stick it in my quick launch bar and use the shortcut to launch it. Which, if you didn’t know there was a shortcut, is Windows Key + Corresponding Number, so if it’s the first thing on there then windows key + 1 and it will launch. Very useful for other things as well.

I use IrfanView for exactly what you have described

qualitycontrol's avatar

you mean you paste the screen into IrfanView? I use IrfanView as well, mostly to convert images, change resolution etc. Does it have something that allows you to crop right on your screen and it goes right to IrfanView?

RareDenver's avatar

@qualitycontrol yep, [print screen] then paste into IrfanView, crop what you want, ctrl x then open word and ctrl v

simples ;-)

Paint!
Take screenshots by pressing “Print Screen” button (“Alt + Print Screen” to copy the active window).
Paste in Paint and edit it.

Powerpoint is also a good bet. You can save by right-clicking and save picture to save it in jpg or other formats.
