Should we be allowed to elect a president more than twice?

Asked by pikipupiba (1629points) August 7th, 2009

Let’s say, hypothetically, there was a president who knew what the heck he was doing (remember, hypothetically) and most people in the US loved him (or her). Why shouldn’t we be allowed to elect him to as many terms as we, the people, want. Why call it quits at two terms when everything is going great?

In a perfect world, yes.

But in a world where elections can (and have been) stolen, no.

NO

There are very good reasons why presidents are limited to only 2 terms in office.

It could be tantamount to setting up a monarchy. Thomas Jefferson said, “if some termination to the services of the chief Magistrate be not fixed by the Constitution, or supplied by practice, his office, nominally four years, will in fact become for life.”

The rationale for the two term rule (which is also an amendment to the US Constitution, the 22nd one) : The rationale was a concern that without limits, the presidential position could become too similar to that of a benevolent dictator lasting not just four years but a lifetime, and that the position could become too powerful and upset the separation of powers. Hence, the Twenty-second Amendment was adopted.

@Zendo I don’t see a problem with someone being the president for many, many years if they do a damn good job. We can still vote them out if we don’t like them, like any other president.

If being able to vote them out somehow doesn’t cover our bases, please explain.

First of all incumbents, as has been shown in studies, have a huge advantage.

Second, changing of the guard through peaceful elections is what our democracy is all about.

Third, people in office can get corrupted by the power. Knowing there are limits is important.

We have already seen that US presidential elections are so corrupt and full of cheating and lying that it seems improbable that we would be able to vote a pres out of office after a 3rd or 4th term.
He would just get re-instated by the US Supreme Court, along with, oh, maybe the Florida State Supreme court.

So voting a bad one out may not be so easy as you think.

yea, i think I agree, maybe if we came up with a perfect system for electing presidents.

I have noticed how relatively young and fresh faced the past few presidents look upon taking office and how old and haggard with grey hair and bags beneath their eyes when they leave. I’m not sure their bodies could take another term or two as the president.

Not only do I think they shouldn’t be allowed to be voted in more than twice, I don’t think other family members should be able to run for president until a certain amount of time has passed.

@mrentropy…if only that could be retroactive….........

If not for the 22nd Amendment, we would have reelected the much beloved Ronald Reagan again, even though he was past his ability for critical thought. Clinton would have probably been reelected, too. The threat of another election might have even caused him to behave.
I don’t like the law, but I can see it’s benefits.

Just imagine the damage Bush would have caused if he was still in power now. His presidency may already be responsible for irreversible damage; a continuation of his policies would have been end of the world disastrous.

Anyways, the point is that no term limits is great when you have a good president, but any rational thinker knows that you have to plan for the worst case scenario. A limit of two terms put a cap on the damage one jerk can inflict on our country.

Bush was no threat for a third term. Those that voted for him in the first two realized what a mess he made of things. Well, MOST of them. I am sure others will deny that.

NOOOO that would be terrible
