Do you think hate can be productive or good?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) August 8th, 2009

Is hate, under any circumstance, beneficial or positive? The word as we all know it generally has extremely negative connotations.

After you answer the general question, will you try hard to think of a circumstance that hate might very well be a good thing? Share your idea with everyone.

if you hate a problem you can try to find a solution.

Example A: I hate to stand up and bathe – Solution A: a tub!

…on the other hand, Hitler had a solution. not so good.

When I went to war with my ex-boss, my hate pushed me forward. I controlled it with my devotion to truth, but hate was the fuel that kept me going.
I am not proud of that, but it was necessary.

As long as it’s well-tempered, I believe conflict can be constructive. For example, when I was studying in the library there was someone who had opened a window next to me on a chilly day. They said it was too stuffy and insisted on keeping it open. I did develop a kind of irritation (which I’m considering a less-emotional version of hate) but eventually we just agreed to open a window somewhere else so that it wasn’t stuffy nor was the wind blowing on me.

Hate can produce stress and sometimes illness. It can build barriers to communication. That’s the productive side.

For the good that comes from hate, if they want to make a remake of the Wizard of Oz they can have a casting call for the most hate-filled people around so they can find someone to play the wicked witch

Hate makes great competitive rivalries.
When the Vikings play the Packers this season, you will be able to cut the hate with a knife.

To quote Luanne Platter: “I hate hate.”

Hating something negative might make you more passionate about changing it or making things better. It doesn’t mean make yourself bitter or violent about it, but there are some things you can hate and try to fix. I hate homophobia. I don’t hate homophobes. It’s kind of like “love the sinner, hate the sin”.

I hate to think so.

Actually I used my hate a lot during school to sharpen my focus and it actually help me get good grades a few times. Mostly used to plow through some subjects.

“your hate gives you focus, makes you strong.”
– that ethic built two Death Stars. can’t argue with that.

@eponymoushipster Y’know, I’ve seen the movies and read some summaries on the books and It’s led me to think the reason a bunch of the jedi’s go bad if the fact that they are constantly(though accidentally) taught fear of and avoidance of negative emotion and it’s that which makes them so susceptible to going bad. they can’t handle their emotions. It was exactly his lack of management ability that turned Anakin into torso litebrite-robo-asthmatic

What is hate? Is it just the lack of love?

Buttonstc's avatar

That brings up an interesting thought in attempting to answer.

I don’t recall where I first encountered this but find a lot of truth in it.

“The opposite of love is not hate——It is indifference” ithink that’s pretty accurate.

Therefore it could be said that there is something positive about hate because it is an indicator that you are emotionally involved. It indicates that you care.

Hate is a very strong word and to me means dislike with a passion. Hating a specific situation, or person, for that matter, is not necessarily a bad thing provided it, and any resulting revenge desire, do not consume you or affect your health and well being. And, as others have pointed out, it may even produce beneficial results, when, for example, one hates a disease enough to research and discover a cure or treatment.

When you are close to people who hurt your loved ones repeatedly, I feel you have to hate them or you’ll be torn.

Hatred of injustice?

I think many of us hated the war that Bush started.

It took haters to change what he did.

How can you define or find value in love it if you cant compare it to something negative.
Like Hate.

Any positive goal has to have an opposite to it.

wundayatta's avatar

I don’t think we would hate if it didn’t have some survival value. I guess it leads to self-protection. Maybe it gets the adrenaline rushing. Helps you fight.

Not all things you hate are venal. Hate could make you work harder for social justice, as @jonsblond says.

True hate. No. It does harm to the person feeling the hatred.

You may hate a person or something, which can lead to a motivation. That can be productive..thus you may hate your opponent in a sport and spur you to better performance. That can be good, you, thus, might win. It would undoubtedly be a fleeting feeling of “good”. But when hate is mixed with anger and retribution, then it will lead to dysfunction and unproductive behaviour. But certainly some hate can lead to some good, albeit not often.

Whoopsydaisy…this post was meant for another thread…

Yes, as the above posts prove lol. I have resorted to Hate many times in my life on order to drive me to do something positive in my life or get out of a bad situation…it’s one of our most basic human instincts and there’s a reason why. Some of the reasons that cause Hate can be a little dreary but it definitely has it’s benefits.

MerMaidBlu's avatar

It can be a disease at the same time and thats never good

tiffyandthewall's avatar

most of the things i can think of that would make hate beneficial are circumstances that result out of hate.
for instance, hating war. well, war comes out of hate (for the most part).
but i guess that it’s quite possible for hating a thing to be beneficial. hating a person? i can’t think of a circumstance in which it would be helpful.
