What will happen if I stop using toothpaste?

Asked by gunther (169points) August 14th, 2009

I don’t want my teeth to rot out of my head, but I’m concerned about the effect that fluoride might have on my body and mind. My tap water is fluoridated. If I stop using toothpaste, but still brush and floss, will my teeth stay healthy?

flouride is not intended to be ingested into your body.. just using it on your teeth I’m not sure how this affects your mind and body..

You’re going to want to go with what your dentist recommends and brush your teeth with toothpaste..

I’m pretty sure there are toothpastes without fluoride in them. Try Tom’s of Maine.

My dad used to use baking soda all the time. We were pretty poor and I used it when we ran out of toothpaste It doesn’t taste great but it gets the job done!

What effect does fluoride have on your body & mind? Is the government using it too brainwash us all and make us buy more and more toothpaste?~ As far as I know the fluoride in toothpaste helps to reinforce and harden the coating of the teeth and thus helping you prevent cavities. I don’t know much else about toothpaste, but I think another use of it is sort of like sandblasting.

As a kid they asked me if I wanted to participate in some sort of test where every 6 months (till my 18th birthday) they gave me a mouth full of some fluoride based substance and told me not to swallow for 15 minutes. So maybe I’m already brainwashed and my answer should get removed by a moderator.

Your concerns about the effects of fluoride in toothpaste are greatly exaggerated. As long as you don’t swallow a whole tube all at once you’re safe. Brushing your teeth without toothpaste is less effective. Keep your teeth in shape and you will have less trouble especially when you get older. Think of the unpleasant visits to dentists. This should motivate you.

First off, your fears of fluoride are unfounded so long as you don’t eat the tube of toothpaste. Like you said, your tap water has it too, so even if you stop using toothpaste, you’re still going to be consuming fluoride, so you need to either abandon tap water as well or recognize that your fear is irrational.

If you decide to still choose to avoid fluoride, you can find a toothpaste without fluoride in it. But you’ll likely be going to the dentist more often, because the fluoride helps your teeth remain strong and stable, so without it your teeth will be more susceptible to damage. Toothpaste’s primary purpose is to contribute gritty bits that help scrape away the plaque in combination with the brushing action, so as long as you use some toothpaste (even baking soda would work, it’s gritty) you’ll get benefits.

Flossing will not help with the removal of fluoride.

If you eliminate fluoride from your life, your teeth will not stay as healthy as someone who keeps fluoride in their life. There’s a reason they put it in the tap water (and it’s not mind control)!

Did you find some old literature from the John Birch Society when they were preaching that municipal fluoridation was a Communist plot? That point of view has been considered somewhat comic for about the last 60 years.

You could always try tooth chips. It’s basically chewing on soap. http://www.roseofsharonacres.com/ Ignore the religious material…I just googled “tooth chips” and that site came up. My friends get them off Etsy.

You could also brush your teeth with distilled water or spring water, which are not flouridated.

I don’t think daily use of fluoride toothpaste or in tap water has affected anyone in history. But, if you’re really concerned, Burt’s Bees makes a lavender mint toothpaste which is an acquired taste but makes your teeth feel super clean!

For those of you who assure me that it is safe: It may be, but I still don’t feel comfortable putting rat poison in my mouth, even in small quantities.

If they go through the trouble of putting it in the water supply in the first place, it would seem that that small amount is enough to have some effect on teeth, otherwise why would they do it at all? The amount of fluoride in toothpaste is much higher, and it just seems like a lot to me. Maybe I’ll use fluoride toothpaste once a week, and use baking soda the rest of the time.

My dog has very strong teeth, and he obviously doesn’t use fluoride toothpaste. I assume this is because of his diet. Are there certain foods I should be avoiding to help keep my teeth healthy? Or certain foods that will naturally clean my teeth? It just seems odd to me that after millions years of evolution our teeth wouldn’t be strong enough to stay healthy without the use of a manufactured chemical.

My dad is a dentist and he says that the important part is the actual brushing—not the use of toothpaste. So, I suppose that you could just brush with water.

You should know that fluoride creates a thick layer of poison on the teeth makng it appear stronger, but fluoride actually takes the calcium out of the teeth making them brittle and pourous. It may kill cavaties but your teeth may break off! Also the real reason they put fluoride in the water is because it is a chemical waste product of the alluminum plants and it would cost billions to properly dispose of it, so they make us think it is good for you and put it in the water. Fluoride should never be ingested. It is a cumalitive toxin that causes many health problems, bone cancer and brain damage.

Chances are, your health would improve and you’d grow a beard. I never use toothpaste and my beard is like 20 inches long and I’ve never been healthier.

Well first off if you are conserned about floride then you should probably get a proper floride filter for your house, ( ones made of ground bone are best, google it) so your skin absorbes alot of water during bathing and it also absorbes all the bad stuff also in the water, so it’s gonna cost a lot to completely detox from it. Second don’t use toms ” natural” tooth paste, it contains a few synthetic ingrediance that can be potentially harmful, one being silica, you know what’s in the small packets in a shoe box that says “do not eat”. ( some fast food resturans also use it in meats and its also found in lots of other stuff like vitamins) so if you really want to take things to the extreme and have the mentality that you want to live as naturally as possible you can start by removing a few things. And also Someone mentioned above that we evolved for millions of years without chemicals to clean our teeth, well in fact mother nature takes care of us extremely well here, google Dr. Weston price and his studies Show that certain indiginous people that are isolate from the modern world had perfect oral hygiene despite the fact the never brushed there teeth, and there is an even greater fact non of them had crooked teeth because their jaws had all developed large enough to acomidate all there teeth, about 10 yars later ater this study the people were exposed to modern processed food for the first time and it was only then did they start developing cavities very quickly. So that brings us to a whole new topic, just how healthy is the food we are eating? There are quite a few excelltent documentaries that you can watch on Netflix with a free month trial, watch ” forks over knives”, and ” food matters” to start you on the right direction. Read up on it your self, we should take an example from these indiginous people instead of always relying on the modern way all the time. Some doctors ven have he opninon that floride causes harm, I’ve had floride spots on my teeth before and I rarely drank the water, I probably got it from cooking with tap, not I use filtered all the time. The spots did go away and that was before using tap. Find the doctor on you tube he is at Court showing his evIdence against floride. We are all entitled to our own opinions and our own choices on what we want.

Second don’t use toms ” natural” tooth paste, it contains a few synthetic ingrediance (and we and to minimalize exposure to those), one being silica (you know what’s in the small packets in a shoe box that says “do not eat” ; some fast food restaurants like taco bell also use it in meats and its also found in lots of other stuff like vitamins and soaps) so if you really want to take things to the extreme and have the mentality that you want to live as naturally as possible you can start by removing a few things. And also Someone mentioned above that we evolved for millions of years without chemicals to clean our teeth, well in fact mother nature takes care of us extremely well here, google “Dr. Weston price” and his studies Show that people that had zero contact with the modern world had perfect oral hygiene despite the fact the never brushed there teeth, and there is an even greater fact none of them had crooked teeth because their jaws had all developed large enough to acomidate all there teeth, well about 10 years later after his study the people were exposed to modern processed food for the first time and it was only then did they start developing cavities very quickly. There are quite a few excelltent documentaries that you can watch on Netflix with a free month trial, watch ” forks over knives”, and ” food matters” to start you on the right direction, search through their documentaries and you will find a large amount on diet health, medicine and serious global problems (you should also get your own opinion about some of these topics by doing your own research) Read up on it your self, we should take an example from these indiginous people instead of always relying thank web medicine as a cure all. Mother nature is very clever and can soo quite a lot without our help. Its when we want to add to her and interfere that we prevent natural process from taking place. Some doctors even have the opninon that floride causes harm, I myself had floride spots on my teeth before and I rarely drank tap water, I probably got it from cooking with tap, now i use filtered all the time. The spots did go away and that was before switching to filtered. So, find the doctor on you tube he is at Court showing his evIdence against floride. We are all entitled to our own opinions and our own choices on what we want. His points are just as valid as the doctors with opposite opinions. Also one thing about our government, we call ourselves a democracy, our pledge of allegiance is made to a republic, and when you look at the actions of you government to try and define what type of government it is; it can fit the definition of an oligarchy. Bottom line is that government choose how they want to define themselves but this is just their ideal, not what they actually are. Well I hope this is usefull to someone
