What's one thing you would change about yourself?

Asked by le_inferno (6194points) August 14th, 2009

I don’t mean physically. We all have flaws in our personality, obviously, so which one do you think you would be far better off without?

That’s an easy question for me. I’m impatient.

That’s why I could NEVER teach.

I would change my work ethic. I am the absolute worst when it comes to assignments; I procrastinate hardcore. I am not motivated to do work unless there is time pressure to urge me along, when I’m forced to focus and get it done. Otherwise, I just won’t. I get the job done and get it done well, but getting to that point is extremely unpleasant and stressful.

I would make myself less dependent on others’ approval. Even if I dislike a person, I want them to like me. I wish my confidence was not rooted in other people’s opinions of me, physically and otherwise.

I’d want to be less self-conscious and be able to talk to people more readily, rather than being reclusive until they make the effort to approach me, or we’re in a situation where interaction is inevitable.

There are more things about myself that people would generally think of as “negative qualities,” but I’ve embraced them as part of who I am. I don’t necessarily see myself as any better or worse off for them.

My nervousness and whatever’s blocking me from scoring chicks

drdoombot's avatar

I would increase my confidence.

Or remove my procrastination response.

I’d tone down the humility a bit. I’m just so damn humble. No one can even approach my level of modesty.

Sunflower's avatar

I wish I had more self esteem

Quagmire's avatar

I tell ya, I USED to be conceited, but now I’m perfect.

marinelife's avatar

I give up too easily.

dpworkin's avatar

I wouldn’t mind losing 25 or 30 years. People lose weight, why can’t I lose age?

Facade's avatar

Me sans depression is pretty damn amazing, so I’ll take that.

janbb's avatar

I can be a bit of a know-it-all and arrogant about it at times. Other than that, I know I’m perfect. :-)

Also (if I can have two) I wish I could handle stress better.

quasi's avatar

less anxiety

Rainsgirl's avatar

I’d stop being afraid of everything.

YARNLADY's avatar

I don’t need to lose anything – what I need is more motivation.

marinelife's avatar

@YARNLADY Well, according to some whiners, you have come to the right place.

Bri_L's avatar

I have a problem with paranoia. I would like to care less about what other people think when it doesn’t really matter to me.

irocktheworld's avatar

Umm..I would deffinitely boost up my confidence and try very hard not to care what people say or think of me because I really don’t want to care but I just do.I want to be like that so bad.:)

Supacase's avatar

I can think of many answers, but I’m going to go with more self-discipline. Seems it would solve, or at least improve, some of the other issues as well.

AstroChuck's avatar

I’d like to someday grow older than just six years-old.

(I know. You said not physical change, but I want a real drink, dammit!)

aprilsimnel's avatar

I’d stop maligning myself so much. Since when did I have to be perfect?

YARNLADY's avatar

@daloon Would you care to elaborate on that any?

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

I’d like to be able to finish a project before moving onto the next one. I suffer from what I call Leonardo da Vinci Syndrome. He couldn’t finish a project either. =)

InspecterJones's avatar

If I had to pick anyone about myself, as a person, to change, it would be…..

MONEY!

I would wanna change the amount of cash I have so I can be filthy stinking rich, other then that, I’m alright.

does this fall within the guidelines of the question?

augustlan's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra I am so stealing “Leonardo da Vinci Syndrome”. That sounds much better than “no follow through”! Other than that, I’m also going with @Supacase: More self-discipline would go a long way towards improving my life.

Sarcasm's avatar

I’d like to worry less.

Grisaille's avatar

I’d like to be able to live with the fact that I’ll never be able to know everything about a particular subject.

I’m rewatching Sagan’s Cosmos, and whenever I go off to research a particular point that is brought up, one thing leads to another. Soon, I’m swarmed with facts, details and a myriad of view points, no longer even on the original topic at hand. There is just so much knowledge out there waiting to be gained, and I have this need to have it all.

I feel a sense of fear whenever I start to think that I’ll never know it all. I wish I could cast that away, and be able to live without the worry – the worry of intellectual imperfection.

augustlan's avatar

@Grisaille You should read The Know it All. Funny book about one man’s quest to become the smartest man in the world. :)

Grisaille's avatar

@augustlan Reading the short synopsis, it sounds awesome!

Might just purchase it.

Sampson's avatar

I wish that I wouldn’t be so distrusting towards others. I always assume that there’s a second motive behind their actions/words.

Quagmire's avatar

I wish I would NOT feel the way I do when I save up money to buy an expensive electronic device I’ve wanted for a long time and a few weeks later I either see it a lot cheaper somewhere or maybe a better one for less money.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

I would want to not be so impulsive with my anger – so much stupidity around me, it angers me, wish I wouldn’t react so much

nebule's avatar

whatever emotional baggage that I have that is blocking the healing of my physical body..I’d like that to become vividly apparent to me…

jonsblond's avatar

@Sampson I’m the complete opposite of you. I’m too trusting of others. I have been hurt many, many times because of this.

gottamakeart's avatar

“inner peace” maybe?

Jude's avatar

Not procrastinating as much would be nice.

Aster's avatar

I would like to be a “people person” like I was in high school.
