Does anybody know a good vampire book, that has no romance?

Asked by gbelste (89points) August 14th, 2009

Mild romance is okay, but nothing like Twilight, Blue Bloods, True Blood, or the House of Night series, or anything that is so popular right now.

I like action adventure, fantasy, etc. I want a Vampire book like that, without romance.

Also, it would be great if the book is geared toward either teenagers or young adults… or a very unsophisticated adult novel.
Thanks! :D

Can’t do much better than the original, Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Excerpt:

” Having had some time at my disposal when in London, I had visited the British Museum, and made search among the books and maps in the library regarding Transylvania; it had struck me that some foreknowledge of the country could hardly fail to have some importance in dealing with a nobleman of that country.

I find that the district he named is in the extreme east of the country, just on the borders of three states, Transylvania, Moldavia, and Bukovina, in the midst of the Carpathian mountains; one of the wildest and least known portions of Europe.

I was not able to light on any map or work giving the exact locality of the Castle Dracula, as there are no maps of this country as yet to compare with our own Ordance Survey Maps; but I found that Bistritz, the post town named by Count Dracula, is a fairly well-known place. I shall enter here some of my notes, as they may refresh my memory when I talk over my travels with Mina. ”

I’m going out on a limb here, but how about Dracula?

Damn you and your fast fingers Marina!

There is a whole huge series by Brian Lumley called the “Necroscope” series. It’s a very interesting and unique spin on the Vampire concept.

Besides Dracula… they don’t really exist.

The Cirque Du Freak series is a good deal about vampires, and as far as I know (I haven’t finished the whole series) there is little or no romance. I’d consider it a Young Adult read. It’s interesting and captivating, but that’s just my suggestion. Good luck finding the perfect vampire book!

No mention of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles? She basically created the awesome/sexy/cool vampires we see today in her first vampire book, Interview With The Vampire. There’s a strong sensuality that runs through her books, possibly even a little homoerotic, but not romantic. Besides all that, she is one of the best crafters of prose I’ve ever read. It just rolls of the tongue. If she were writing about the finer points of gardening, I’d be all over it.

In my opinion, all the vampire books that came after hers are just copycats and poseurs.

@drdoombot You are correct, sir. Anne Rice is by far one of the best writers of the vampire genre. All else pales by comparison. She could write about economics and make it interesting.

I like Christopher Pike’s “Last Vampire” series. Its got a little romance in it, but its more of a practical forever-old creature view on love that isn’t sappy at all. There are 5 of them.

Wow. I think Anne Rice is an awful writer, and an even worse person. (Yes, I’m speaking from personal experience and have dealt with her one-on-one.)

I read The Society of S by Susan Hubbard a while back. I didn’t really care for it but it does fit your requirements.

Does I am Legend count? theres no vampire book without romance that takes out the purpouse of a vampire book.

I’ve been reading The Diaries of the Family Dracul by Jeanne Kalogridis. It’s the story of Dracula before the Dracula done by Bram Stoker. It’s very interesting. There are 3 books “The Children of the Vampire”
“The Covenant of the Vampire”
“Lord of the Vampires”

It’ll be VERY hard to find. I’m 20-years-old and when I was in 8th grade, I read a book called The Harvestwood Murders and it’s about vampires. I’ve spent the last 6 years trying to find the book again and haven’t been able to. If you find it, let me know.

How about Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko

Many of Terry Pratchett’s books feature vampires, but in a strictly non-romantic sense. The Fifth Elephant is a great example. Same with The Truth.

What are the point of vampires exactly, without romance? Isn’t all that blood-drinking a metaphor for sex and the little death? The blood, the night, the Christian opposition, the aristocratic guise—I thought it was all about romance which is a cover-up, elaboration, and embellishment of sex. The hunger for blood of the vampire is the hunger for sex. The eternal life of the vampire rests in the results of sex—children and their children.

@circedog That is where Pratchett excels – the mockery of the vampire stereotypes and the presentation of a multi-dimensional vampire.

I’m reading Let the Right One In. No romance, at least half way through. It’s alright, not alot of action. A few characters are “vampire-like” but they dont call themselves vampires.
They drink human blood.
They don’t like sunlight.
They freakout at the sight of blood. lol.
If you’ve exhausted the above selections, give this book a try. Or you can just watch the movie. :)

I’m currently about halfway through The Summoning by Bentley Little. There’s definitely not vampire porn involved, and so far I’m sufficiently freaked out. But as much as I love Bentley Little, his endings tend to let me down a bit. We’ll see how this goes…

Check out “The Black Castle” by Les Daniels.

It has some romance in it, but nothing like all that preteen bullshit of today. The book is very violent and exciting, dealing with a vampire in 1599 Spain who is totally evil and cruel…but even HE is disgusted by the Inquisition. Lotsa stuff happens, there’s adventure, fighting, some corny stuff, lots of philosophy and theology, general classic vampire lore, and, as I mentioned, sword fights and burning. XD

No sparkly wussy vampires or dominating boyfriends.

Oh and causing natural disasters.

Only thing is, it’s not mean for a teenage audience, because it’s pretty morbid and graphic, but it’s beyond worth it if you like vampire stories.

besides, I think plenty of teenagers would enjoy it, even if it’s geared more towards the “young adult” crowd.

Like Count Saint-Germain, this vampire appears in plenty of other books, but the very first is definitely worth it.

The Vladimir Tod Chronicles, although has a crush on a girl, has only a couple sentences worth of romance. I love the book myself, I hate books with romance in them (And love vampire books) and am very pleased with this one. It has action, drama, some mystery involved, and confusing teenage friendships, not to mention him trying to contain himself not bitting the people close to him. I’m all the way on book three of this one.

Other than that there is the Night Runner series by Max Turner which has, as far as I know, recently started up, that I have recently been reading. So far, I’m in the middle, and found not a trace of romance. It’s about Zack Thomson finding out the truth about himself, finding out who killed his father, who’s after to seek his life, etc. It’s quite a thriller, and I am very pleased with it.

I hope to find others soon.
