Do you fly first class on airplanes?

Asked by DeanV (14216points) August 16th, 2009

This sorta popped into my mind because today, when flying back from Los Angeles I realized that my ticket said first class. Which was a little odd, because I’m pretty damn sure I didn’t pay for first class. Still, though, it was the only time I’ve ever flown up there, and probably the only time I ever will.

I could certainly see upgrading on longer flights, but seeing so many people in first class on a 1 hour flight sort of made me wonder why. I just don’t think it’s worth it to cough up the dough for such a short flight…

So do you fly first class? And if you do, why? And maybe somebody could help me understand why I was bumped up there…

I used to only fly first class, when travelling with my grandmother. But, when I fly, I fly coach. Doesn’t bother me. It’d be nice to be able to afford it, and it’d be nice with a toddler…but we do coach.

marinelife's avatar

Not when I am paying for it.

I did a lot when I flew so much on business that I could upgrade with miles.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

if it’s a trans atlantic/pacific flight yeah, but within the states, coach is fine and dandy.

I only fly first class because I only go to Jalisco, Mexico…..which is like 5 hours on plane…
I only go once every 3 years though. :)

We fly to Israel and back (from the U.S.) all the time which is a 10–12 hour flight, but never fly first class as we can’t afford it. I’m told the only time I’ve ever not flown coach was when they bumped our family to first class due to overbooking coach, but I was too young to remember it. Even on a 12 hour flight, coach isn’t so bad, and for one stupid flight it’s not worth it to me to spend an extra however many hundreds of dollars it is.

If I flew over seas more often I would probably go coach, but I only take a trip to europe or the pacific once every couple years so I have plenty of time to save up the extra dough for first class.

I pay for coach and use miles to upgrade to at least business if I’m going more than 3 hours.
I will never again fly coach overseas. 2 nightmares were enough.

I’ve never flown first class but business class is nice.
I think they should just make every seat business class.

DeanV's avatar

@The_Compassionate_Heretic Agreed. First Class is nice, but business class is comparable, and cheaper. I think the only real difference between first and business is the size of the seat. The legroom seems the same.

I may be the dissenting opinion here, but I always fly first class, and it’s absolutely worth it. Some airlines are better than others, so coach is fine, but in general I go first class.

The only time that I ever flew first class was on a long flight from Kampala, Uganda, to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I was sitting in coach and got bumped up for no apparent reason. The steward told me that somebody else was going to get my seat, but I was traveling with a group, and they told me that nobody ended up sitting there. I must say, if I were to get to choose a time to be upgraded randomly, it would have been on that flight. Maybe this is just long flights on KLM, but there were free movies, free music, and free video games. well, I guess they were free for me, the extra price on first class probably covers that.

My jet only has five seats and the jacuzzi only holds two. Sometimes life isn’t fair. ~_~

cyn's avatar

@SeventhSense Life isn’t fair?! Are you serious?! At least you have a damn jacuzzi and a jet!

When I fly, I’m only on the plane for an hour and half, and there is no first class.

Ansible1's avatar

First class travelers die first if the plane goes down….just sayin’....

DeanV's avatar

@Ansible1 Only in the event of a nosedive. At least they go down with some extra legroom. If I die in a plane crash, it’s just my time to go anyway.

For international travel, I do fly business/1st class solely because my employer pays. I’ve flown 1st class on Qatar Airways/Lufthansa/Emirates/Etihad and it far surpasses that which I’ve found while flying here in the States on United/American/etc.

From someone who traveled with his mother a lot, I have to say I’ve always thought first class was a scam. I mean, you have a little extra room and 25% more courtesy. Personally, I’m not there for the peanuts and bottled water. I just want to get to where I need to be. If you’re flying for 24 hours or something ridiculous like that, of course first class would be ideal though.

I don’t ever fly cattle class it’s too cramped and usually full of dickheads! First is nice but business is a good second, and you usually get treated well on B.A and the new beds are comfy enough ;)

I have thrice, first when I moved from Madison to NYC, and twice more when I travelled between LA and Sydney in both directions. It was very nice. But I’m small, so the only thing that bothers me being in coach is the screaming of young children. The seats are fine, I’d rather bring my own food anyway, and I’ve usually got my books and charged iPod. Sorted!

tedibear's avatar

I have twice. Once, I upgraded myself with miles so that I could fly home on a red-eye from San Jose to Cleveland. My thought was that I would be able to sleep. Didn’t happen. The seat was comfy, but the droning engine noise made it impossible for me to get to sleep completely. (An issue I have on any plane flight unless I drup up with some Benadryl.)

The second time was an upgrade from Continental Airlines. I got to the desk and must have looked very stressed. The agent asked why I was flying to Buffalo (I think he must have seen that my reservation was made that morning.) and I replied, “My mother is dying and I need to get home as quickly as I can.” He said, “I’m so sorry to hear that,” typed a whole bunch more, handed me my ticket and said, “I upgraded you to first class. I know it’s not much, but I hope it helps make your trip a little easier.” That small act of kindness meant a lot.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

Not when I purchase my own tickets. On many flights, if there are open seats in 1st class before takeoff then you can request to be moved and it’s been about a 40/60% chance I’ve gotten the seat. Ask, ask, ask.

Here’s a tip: take the train whenever you can. Trust me, it may be notoriously slow, but even first class can be several hundred dollars cheaper than on any airline. And it’s so much more relaxed, too; No security lines, no loud noises (except for the station), etc.

Judi's avatar

When I have compared, airline tickets were comprable, if not cheaper than the train.

I don’t travel around the East coast so you could me right. Try LAX to New York, or even Phonex. Trains are probably more affordable on the East Coast.
Why the hostility?

@Fred931
Yes that makes sense. ~_~
My brother just flew to AZ from NY for $200 round trip. I couldn’t pay for gas to Ohio with that.
Do you wear spats and do the Charleston with your beau down at the speakeasy also?

I always fly first. I’m 6’5’’ 240 lbs and not a masochist. JAL and Singapore Airlines treat you like royalty on trans-Pacific runs. Someday I’m going to try this “super-first” on the A380, like a small hotel room; sleep in a real bed on the 18 hour flight.
