Do you believe that an alien spacecraft crashed near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947?

Asked by PerryDolia (3481points) August 18th, 2009

Since the 1970’s we have sent space probes to every planet in our solar system and most of their moons. It is clear there is no other place in our solar system where we can live. There certainly is no other place in our solar system with a technological civilization.

So, to believe a space craft crashed in New Mexico in 47, you would have to also believe that the advanced civilization can travel faster than light, in order to travel the interstellar distances.

I wish I believed it. It is a great story. But, I don’t. Do you? If so, what do you think is going on?

I wouldn’t be surprised

I think that most every other explanation of the Roswell crash is more likely than the extraterrestrial theory.

dpworkin's avatar

This story isn’t really even a mild controversy any more. Everyone knows exactly what happened at Roswell, and except for some very hopeful kooks, no one thinks it had anything to do with extraterrestrials.

SuperMouse's avatar

No I do not.

Funny thing! A long time ago I was lurking on a website for my son who was doing a report. I followed a forum where a few writers said that they were stationed at Area 51 and it was a regular base. A few other posters said that they worked there are were privvy to all the clandestine alien activity. These posters said that the posters that didn’t see anything weren’t important enough or stuff like that. I believe the ones who said their were no aliens because I am pretty sure that anyone who had enough rank and security clearance to access this stuff would probably be trustworthy enough to not be writing security secrets on some random forum….. Of course, some may be throwing us off the scent.
In reality, I would be ignorant if I didn’t believe that somewhere in this entire universe that there were planets that sustain biological life as we define it. Whether they look anything close to us or whether or not they are sophisticated enough to travel to see us, I don’t know. I would think not. If they were that sophisticated, I am SURE that they would be sophisticated enough to communicate with us properly (no anal probing for God’s sake!) and I think they would be sophisticated enough to hunt out our leaders and not just a few questionably sane people who live in Kansas.

Jack79's avatar

Probably not. Was pretty sure at the time the tape came out.

maybe…

filmfann's avatar

I don’t believe it. But, I don’t discount the possiblity of Aliens.
I just figure that if they can handle the technology of light speed space travel, they don’t really need to repeatedly do anal probes.

doggywuv's avatar

No. I believe that there are intelligent civilizations elsewhere in the universe, but that they are too far away for them to have reached us.

Yeah, I do.

AstroChuck's avatar

No, of course not.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

I’ve seen no credible evidence to suggest this.

quarkquarkquark's avatar

No, not necessarily. But there’s obviously more to the story and it seems like it sure as hell wasn’t a weather balloon.

I think the “Majestic 12” documents are pretty interesting to read about. The probability of our existence on earth and the magnitude, or size, of the universe is so startling I don’t see any reason why there wouldn’t be other life out there. http://www.majesticdocuments.com/documents/1960-1969.php

quarkquarkquark's avatar

@AtSeDaEsEpPoAoSnA, the majestic documents have been proven to be fake. Cool stuff, though.

When an american aircraft using experimental propulsion crash landed and the story hit the newpapers, the u.s. government crapped their pants. Fortunately for them when someone shouted “Aliens!” the public ate it up and ran with it.

drdoombot's avatar

@Ansible1 Although “an American aircraft using experimental propulsion crash landing” is a good explanation, don’t you think that after all this time we’d be seeing planes using a different propulsion system? Airplanes haven’t changed all that much in 60 years; the basics are still the same.

I’m not a kook or anything, I was just wondering about that.

Ansible1's avatar

@drdoombot No I do not think so. I could give two possibilites out of many….
1. The technology is still not perfected and giving away the secret that america is even developing this technology would somehow hinder america’s place in technology ranking among the world or compromise the technology itself.
2. The technology is perfected but is being used to conduct top secret missions, and what we see as alien UFO’s are actually crafts made by humans with secret advanced technology.

AtSeDaEsEpPoAoSnA's avatar

@quarkquarkquark, I was alittle sketchy about them. But the idea was pretty cool I thought.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

Nope, it has been refuted countless times not only by the government, but also by skeptics and other non-military experts.

The only people that believe it are kooks, nutjobs, the gullible, and conspiracy theorists.

There is a reason for UFO myths, and this book covers most of them very well.

O,come on!!!Do you really think that a far away alien civilization which travels many light years trought deadly space would really crash in our atmosphere!!!It’s ridiculous!I can bet that aliens exists and if they would really visit us with all their advanced technology you can be certain that they won’t crash on Earth.

CMaz's avatar

No.

Christian95— Good answer!

tramnineteen's avatar

No. I could see the government having done something they wanted to hide and loving the alien story as a cover.

Bluefreedom's avatar

Sure I do. Just like I believe that EVERY single episode of the television show, the X-Files, was based on factual events. Okay, maybe not, but ET’s busted ass ship did leave some wreckage behind as it limped through our atmosphere on the way back to its home planet. Even aliens have mechanical troubles now and again. The world is an imperfect place….screws fall out all the time.

CMaz's avatar

“The world is an imperfect placeā€¦.screws fall out all the time.”

That is why we can bairly make it out of orbit.

something happened there.

It is selfish to think that we are the only civilization in THE UNIVERSE.

Yes. I am a believer . ” It is clear there is no other place in our solar system where we can live.” It is? Cool; then they’re coming from another ssystem. Makes it even More amazing.
What do they want? One theory is they want to repopulate our planet when everything on it blows up. Another is they are populating Their’s with our eggs and our fetuses. One thing is certain: we are not the only human(oids) in the Universe. That is absurd.
Say we are advanced over another planet we’ve discovered and we can get there. I think we’d be very curious about the beings on it and want to examine them too. To aliens, we are so primitive and bizarre.

Just thought of something. My husband was playing golf with the son of a good friend of his. My H knew he was in aerospace? or something and knew about Area 51. So my H asked him about Area 51 and he said, “I know things but if I told you I’d have to kill you.” And that is what he told his mom too; she’s in her mid seventies.

What a skeptical world we are. To think we are the only intelligent beings in the Universe would also make us very narrow minded and close minded. I can see that most who do believe would not come here and answer your questions correctly because of the out and out denial of things they don’t really know. It is all conjecture until you have personal experience with such things but to close the mind and flat out say that it could not be is arrogant and very close minded. Who are any of us who have not experienced such things to say either way? From my life and my personal experiences I would say yes there was a mishap and things were recovered. But until you have been there you cannot say what that was but to close your mind and just say that it could not be something not understandable should not be.

Aster's avatar

No; it was “refuted by the government.”
Give me a break. “Cover up” is more accurate. The government admitted it wasn’t an airplane and that it was a weather balloon. But we know it was not a weather balloon. What was it then? Reynolds Wrap? Many, not a few, army/navy officers are now speaking out; in the past they were afraid. Afraid of what? They’re singing like canaries about what they saw now that they’re old. And what are all those “Stop! Trespassers will be shot !” signs up @ Area 51 all about? I know a man who has been there; retired lieutenant colonel. He won’t tell me anything. He clams up. Why?

Coloma's avatar

Well..all I can say is I had a family friend some years ago that had top secret clearance in his government job and he said make no mistake about it, there are UFO’s & ‘proof’ of otherworldly beings.

That’s all he was at liberty to say at a cocktail party. lol

CMaz's avatar

If I “had top secret clearance in his government job”.

I would say the same thing. Too great an opportunity to fuck with everyone.
