General Question

Do you think people, in this day and age, would look upon aliens from outer space coming down to earth as a POSITIVE thing?

Asked by Quagmire (2088points) August 19th, 2009

Another question prompted me to think about this. In the 50’s, the “UFO Experts” claimed aliens WERE landing on earth and the government knew about it and covered it up. The cover up, these “experts” claimed, was so that the population would not panic in fear.

But we’ve come a long way since then. Do you think that if people TODAY knew that aliens were landing on earth they would panic for the most part? Or would they welcome it? Say we’re talking about people in the United States.

Let’s assume it was ONE spaceship with ONE alien landing somewhere in the U.S. (Heck! If 1000 ships were landing, I think it’s time to panic!).

I think if it became a certainty, so that no one could question whether an alien truly had landed, the world’s governments would react in the extreme, trying to eradicate the aliens or trying to develop a working relationship for technology/commerce. The people of the world would mostly fall into one of the above extremes with a significant number being relatively apathetic of the situation.

I’m specifying United States.

I think the US government would see it as a positive thing, but react in hostility. Much like “The Day the Earth Stood Still”. I don’t think we’d immediately try to blow them out of the sky, but we would turn all weapons on them, expecting the worst. And if we don’t end up destroying everything, the government would probably do whatever they could to get their hands on alien technology, especially if it wasn’t given to us freely.

I think the people of the US are diverse enough that they would be a relatively complete example of the entire world’s reactions.

But I think a lot of people, in a situation like that, take their cues from their Government. From how their government reacts.

I think enough people are suspicious enough of the moral integrity of our government in the US that there would be a significant amount of people keeping an eye on the way the aliens are treated and trying to prevent/reduce any damage they might cause.

You could probably expect the initial reactions to follow the government’s lead, but soon after, people will be able to get their heads around the situation and start thinking for themselves again.

Depends on if they were destroying our cities and people to exterminate us and use earth’s resources. It’s all situational for me.

I think people would totally freak out. Especially really religous people. Would it not turn their world upside down? It would be a mess, think of the hysteria back when “y2k” and around the healthcare thing- “Death Panels!!!” I for one would relocate far, far out into the desert and not return till things calmed down.

I think that World War III or maybe Intergalactic War I would ignite if aliens would land on Earth. In my opinion the two parts would be Religious Fanatics and Science Fanatics. The Religious Fanatics would be strong religious people(if alien would land than God doesn’t exist).Probably they would be the most numerous because they would have a strong attracting neutral people campaign. The Science Fanatics would be less numerous but more powerful. They would be scientist(aliens would be a big chance for a huge step in human evolution).Probably the real aliens believer would join Science Fanatics. If aliens won’t have a “Don’t Change Politics”,they would fight with Science Fanatics. The Science Fanatics would fight for a major change which won’t be good for governments so I think that all governments would fight for Religious Fanatics.

So this will be a small group of special people and a small group of aliens fighting against governments and religious fanatics.

I have enough trouble negotiating the shared costs of repairing a long, dirt driveway with my disagreable neighbors.

I think it could unite earth. The aliens would become the foreigners.

Sure, why not.

Only thing we know about bad aliens as what we see in movies.

An advanced civilization that could travel this far would have to of had many years of a fruitful existence. With a well developed, symbiotic society.

Change is good. We need some new life forms to liven things up here on the Big Blue Marble. And there is always the big unknown of what it would be like to copulate with an extraterrestrial life form (as long as she’s attractive I mean). Just some food for thought there.
