Anyone have anxiety while on abilify?

Asked by lunabean (630points) August 20th, 2009

I’ve been taking abilify for about two weeks and I have been nervous that something would happen to my car and me and this comes from a minor car accident I had in March. I think maybe this has been going on for a week. i’m wondering if it is the abilify or not. I’m also on effexor, for depression and pamelor, for sleeping. I forgot to take my effexor and abilify this morning and I was fine driving my car, for the most part. Maybe it’s a combination with the two medications or maybe my car accident is coming back to haunt me?

Here’s the list of side effects from Drugs.com
Stop using Abilify and call your doctor at once if you have the following symptoms: fever with stiff muscles and rapid heart rate; uncontrolled muscle movements; symptoms that come on suddenly such as numbness or weakness, severe headache, and problems with vision, speech, or balance. Abilify can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Abilify.

The company that makes Abilify says that one serious side effect looks like this:
Very high fever, rigid muscles, shaking, confusion, sweating, or increased heart rate and blood pressure. These may be signs of a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a rare but serious side effect which could be fatal

Drugs.com says this about effexor:
Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

If I were you, I’d call my doctor.

When I am not sure if a drug is creating a side affect I sometimes stop taking it, see if the symptoms go away, and then try the drug again a few weeks later—also called a retrial. With this type of drug I would definitely consult with your doctor before stopping the drug as some psych drugs are dangerous if stopped abruptly, I don’t know much about this particular one. But, I would not let a doctor talk you out of the idea that it might be related to the drug. Some doctors have no patience for side effects and unusual reactions that they have not heard before. I encourage you to go with your gut suspicion.

I agree with @JLeslie that you should only stop taking drugs under a doctor’s supervision. I know people who have stopped their meds suddenly, and tried their own experiments on themselves. They are not people, I would say, who have the best success with dealing with bipolar disorder.

That being said, sometimes—maybe a lot of times—psychiatrists just don’t listen to their patients. They may minimize side effects, or just say they are the person who knows so the patient should do what they say. In such a case, I would tell the psychiatrist, in no uncertain terms, that I am going off the med either with their help or without it. I would also be prepared to find another psychiatrist.

In any case, it is better to have these discussions with psychiatrists after you have done your research about the drugs. If you have evidence, it’s harder for them to ignore you.
