How to draw a line in Photoshop?

Asked by jhbao (212points) August 26th, 2009

Not just any line, but a line with the fading effect you see in the Google Android address book (http://d262803.c39.fortehosting.com/images/Favorites.png). If you’re a Photoshop Guru, please help!

make a selection with the rectangular marquis as long and thin as you want then use the gradient tool

OR you can make a straight line with the pen tool. This will make a path. Then right click with the pen tool and select Stroke Path (The Thickness of the line will depend of the size of your brush). Then a window should pop up. Click on the drop down menu so it is selected to Brush (probably already is) then check the box under it (Checking the box will make it fade on each side of the line). Hope I helped. Any problems and I’ll find another way.

Lotsa ways to skin this cat…

My default was similar to @jaketheripper:
1. Use the Line Tool to draw a line.
2. Rasterize that layer.
3. Lock the transparent pixels.
4. Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select one end of the line.
5. Use the Gradient Tool (with your main bg color and line’s color)
6. Repeat 4 and 5 with the other side of the line.

Or apply a non-destructive gradient fill adjustment layer to the shape.

use the pen tool, click down, if you want it to be straight, hold down the shift key…let me know if you have any other questions :)

@ronski Oh yes forgot about shift key. You can even make a straight line with the brush tool. Just hold Shift and drag and you’ll have a straight line.
