What do you think of the new series Dollhouse, and the issues it explores?

Asked by saraaaaaa (2317points) August 26th, 2009

For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about the name is Dollhouse starring Eliza Dushku based on a complex plotline that explores many allegorical issues relating to human nature, technology and other such wonders, also if you don’t want to know anymore then don’t read on.
The show hasn’t really kicked off in England yet and so I have few people to share my geekyness with so I would like to know what everyone thinks, good and bad. I have read various rumours such as the quality of Dushku’s acting being poor (personally I disagree, for someone who is playing a different character every week whilst having an underlying personality to mix in with those characters, she is doing pretty well.), I am intrigued by the issues it explores with regards to the concept of our personalities being more than electrical and chemical impulses, and also I love Joss Whedon.
Let the religious ramblings commence!

Dollhouse is just okay. I found myself somewhat interested in the overarching plot, and completely uninterested in the “character of the week” Dushku was playing. The best episode so far has been the unaired 13th episode.

Firefly, on the other hand, is simply phenomenal. I only started watching it recently. In fact, I only have one episode left to watch and I am dreading it. I love that show. I wish I could stretch it out. I’m considering going back and reviewing all of the episodes again before watching the last episode I haven’t seen. How a show like this could get canceled while Smallville is going on for a ninth season just blows my mind.

The final episode of Firefly is the best, if you have the DVD then listen to the commentary afterwards also. Whedon’s explanation of the composure of the episode is genius :

I like Dollhouse. It started slow, but I’m interested. I will be watching.

I’m confused as to how I feel about Dollhouse.
I enjoyed watching the episodes, and probably will watch the ones to come in the next season(s).
But I can’t find myself rewatching any of the episodes. I can’t even put words to why I wouldn’t.

I absolutely loved Firefly and Serenity, I’ve watched Serenity 2 or 3 times, and have probably watched all the Firefly episodes 2–3 times as well. Dr. Horrible was pretty amazing. Never watched, or thought about watching, Buffy or Angel

Dollhouse is a disappointment. It’s not exactly recent, but if you wanna check out something else by Whedon, try Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. It’s fantastic! And it has Nathan Fillion from Firefly.

Edit: @sarcasm beat me!

@syz- Have that too.

I hoped for something better from Whedon (i’m obsessed with firefly, just tattooed the letter f in the way it is in the title on my right ankle) but I understand he has to please lots of people and compromise ( i read many of the plots were originally more controversial)...I read different kinds of reviews of the show but found myself not being interested in it…and not wanting to tune in…I don’t like Dushku’s acting, whatsoever…I also understand that he usually writes with a feminist flair but it didn’t really come through, this time
