Have you ever been to a live Cirque Du Soliel performance?

Asked by brinibear (1388points) August 26th, 2009

Well, everytime they come through town, my family and I try to get tickets, but they are too expensive. :( But tonight, I watched the DVD of the new one “Kooza”. I was wondering, what show did you go to, and how did it make you feel? Was it good, and would you recommend it to others?
Since I have never been to a live preformance, I can only tell you what I thought about it being at home. I loved it, and I could feel the tension, the laughter, and I could see the hard work the preformers put in to it. Here is one of my favorites!

I’ve seen Mystere when they were in Vegas, and another when they were in New York. Mystere was my favorite because the way they had it set up, it was almost like the performers were swinging out far enough to touch you. Simply amazing show.

I’ve been to O, and 2 others that I can’t remember the names of.

I would recommend them to anyone. It is simply amazing to see the limitlessness of creativity, and the incredible things other humans can do with their bodies. I leave a Cirque show in absolute awe.

Yes, I am acquainted with a cast member, and I have been lucky enough to receive discounted tickets. It is well worth the price.

La Nouba, in Orlando. I have a friend in that production, and was able to not only enjoy the performance, but also learn about the process behind the creation of a Cirque Du Soliel production. Fascinating. Go. Indulge. Give yourself over to the experience – you will not regret it. I love theatre, and the way they use story and character, all blended together with an eclectic musical score and evocative circus artistry and clowning is truly a unique adventure. Beautiful. It makes for an unforgettable evening.

I saw Cirque Dreams at the theatre near me. Here is a link I found that has the tour dates http://www.cirqueproductions.com/calendar.php it wasn’t very expensive when I went, I think I paid $40 a ticket, but it was not top notch seats. Pricing probably depends on the theatre.

My fantasy job would be to play in the orchestra for a Cirque du Soleil touring show.

I’ve been to three Cirque du Soleil shows, most recently La Nouba. Each time, I have agonized over the high to me cost of the tickets, and each time I have walked out feeling that it was totally worth it.

brinibear's avatar

I’m sure it is totally worth it, but the cheapest tickets I found were $80, and If I could have bought them, I so would have, even one, just for me, but I’m living at home, and I have to help out.

@brinibear Are you in a major market like NY or Chicago? I live in Memphis and there was certainly a variety of prices.

@JLeslie Denver baby where they put up the tent I have a few pictures of the tent, but I can’t get in. : (

TV does not do it justice. I have seen all the Vegas ones (except Zumanity, I guess I’m to much of a prude for the nudity. )
The Love show in Vegas was really disapointing (unless you like interpertive dance.)
I love the live orchestra, amazing vocals and the mind blowing athletes. Truely amazing and a must experience that doesn’t translate to DVD well at all.

brinibear's avatar

@Judi my birthday is in April, ( hint hint) I have always wanted to see it live :)

cheebdragon's avatar

I’ve been to 5 or 6 of them.

@brinibear; have you tried going to the show and seeing if they have any discounted last minute tickets? They would rather have a full house and if you go mid week your chances are better. There are no bad seats in the Vegas shows. (except for Love)

YARNLADY's avatar

related, but different: Hubby won enough money to buy me a ticket to a show I wanted to see

brinibear's avatar

@Judi no I was too young to do it before, and I never saw it advertised in Ut. Mabey they skip it. But that sounds like a good idea. Thanks

Nothing could possibly beat Love. It’s absolutely incredible.

I don’t know what I was expecting from the O show in Las Vegas, but it totally blew me away. If the music, the dance, the athleticism weren’t enough, they had the most amazing stage I’ve ever seen anywhere. Putting that volume of water onto a constantly shifting stage, with some performers wading in the water one second and others diving into it from 50 feet above the next, is a phenomenal technical achievement.

Despite the expense, I wish I could see it again. Or at the very least, I wish they sold a damn DVD of the thing because my memory’s so bad!

My wife saw “O” and loved it. The two of us saw “Varekai” and I was blown away.

I would see any Cirque show anytime if I could afford the tickets.

I saw La Nouba in Walt Disney World last year with my parents, part of my anniversary gift to them. Hooooooooly crap what an amazing show! The tickets were something like $130 each, and worth every single penny. If you’re anywhere near where a performance of Cirque is happening, go to it.

(And for those wondering, no, it is not Disney-fied by being on Disney property. It’s family friendly, to be sure, but there is no Mickey or Donald interacting with the performers. It’s pure Cirque Du Soliel)

Cirque is astonishing! However, I would recommend that you make every effort to see one of the ‘fixed site’ shows, not the traveling shows. I’ve seen six shows total now, and I can tell you that the traveling shows are about ⅓ to ½ as amazing as the shows in Orlando and Vegas.

I have! I believe I went and saw O when it came here. It was an amazing show. I would say that yes it is better than watching the DVDs but the DVDs give you a different view of the show. I have watched the DVD of the live show I saw and enjoyed it in a different way.

Their music is also awesome, I have a few of their show’s CDs on my iPod and it’s often just the music you want to be listening to.

Cirque du Soleil is a completely unique experience which I would encourage any lover of art, color, dance, song, or gymnastics to attend.

A few years ago my husband (then boyfriend) took me to a show in Baltimore. I don’t remember the name of it. I had always watched the shows on TV and was fascinated. It was impressive, though I think I enjoyed watching it on TV more. I guess I caught one of the traveling shows that @syz is talking about. I was a little disappointed, though, it was still a great time.

I saw one a few years ago at The Royal Albert Hall in London. I forget which one now. My da has most of them on DVD too.

Franco Dragone, the director of the best Cirque shows in Vegas also coreographed / directed the Celine Dion show in Vegas.
I got to see her show for free because I have a friend who knows him.
@AstroChuck, people either love or hate the Love show. I was so disapointed because it was nowhere near as grand a production as my expectation (being a cirque lover already) and as much as I love the Beatles, I can listen to their recorded music anywhere. I almost barfed with embarassment when they did “While My Guitar Gently Weaps,” but it was because it reminded me of High School Cheer leaders routines. (I hate interpertive dance,)
It is obvious that Franco Dragone had nothing to do with this show. The Venue also was not designed for this show and there are some bad seats.
I know plenty of people like you though, that thought it was amazing. I just felt like I was ripped of them billing it as a Cirque show.

I saw Mystere, A must see whenever you’re visiting Vegas.
@dynamicduo I agree, I love their music, too.

I saw a performance of “Saltimbanco” years ago. It was well worth the money. The performances were amazing, and the live music was fantastic. There was one section in the middle where a performer asked for audience participation, and did a bunch of visual jokes. That was the only part of the show we didn’t like; it wasn’t that funny, and dragged on much too long. The rest was totally riveting.

Don’t buy the CD of the music; the CD we bought doesn’t have the same arrangements as the live performance. It isn’t nearly as good.

Not yet, I’m saving it for when I make my first time ever trip to Las Vegas. Anyone I’ve talked to who has seen them live has said it was incredible and worth every penny- still, I know what you mean about the expense.
