Had you the opportunity, would you volunteer for a deep space journey that would mean spending the rest of your life in space?

Asked by The_Compassionate_Heretic (14634points) August 27th, 2009

You’d see things that no other human on earth would ever see.
Assume you can procreate in space so that a son or daughter might someday set foot upon a planet in a distant galaxy.

As amazing an opportunity it would be I’d have to decline. Besides leaving my family behind I don’t think I could walk away from life on Earth. I mean no more Del Taco? No thanks.

This is similar to a question I throw to friends all the time: You can have Silver Surfer’s powers, allowing you to travel space at many times faster-than-light speed with no need to eat, sleep or breath. Imagine the things you could see… But you must leave Earth and your family behind. Do you go?

The answer is almost always yes.

Likeradar's avatar

No, no, no. I don’t care nearly enough about space exploration to have any desire to leave this planet.

Zen's avatar

Hmmm. I’ll have to think about that. Maybe when the kids are older…

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

No. I’d love to travel into space but only with the option of coming back to Earth.

If I’d see things that no other human would ever see then that would mean I’d be completely alone. Nope. Probably not.

Now if I was a part of a colony of people going then I’d probably do it.

wenn's avatar

totally. as long as i could bring my guitar and have a beautiful asian girl with me for said procreation. ;)

XOIIO's avatar

I’d have to say yes. I can honestly say there is nothing about my life I would terribly miss, and there are few people who would miss me.

Sarcasm's avatar

Absolutely.

@AstroChuck Any deep space craft I’m spending the rest of my life on will have Del Taco at the very least.

Even though only three people would notice I was gone, my answer’s no. I like earth. It’s beautiful.

As I’m not in a relationship now (or at least not in one that seems like it might have a future) and have no children of my own, I’d go in a heartbeat. I’ve already told my parents and my brother, if the little green men (or women) come callin’, I’m goin’!!! However, if I ever manage to find a real, loving relationship based on genuine care, respect, understanding, compassion, tolerance, etc. etc, then no, I would never leave her or our children.

rooeytoo's avatar

Hell no, I hate getting on a plane because of the claustrophobic effect it has on me, I would never get on a space craft for an undetermined period of time.

I am starting to hyperventilate just thinking about it.

Gotta go find a bag to breathe into and remember it is not good to try to breathe into a plastic bag, brown paper is much preferable.

I am studying biology and am working toward a job in the field of biology. Animal and plant life seems more interesting that finding out if there are cells on Europa or wherever.

El_Cadejo's avatar

In a heartbeat.

SuperMouse's avatar

No I would not. I want to spend every second I possibly can with my man and my boys.

PerryDolia's avatar

@Facade make that four.

OpryLeigh's avatar

No, there are too many people that I love here on earth to give them up for a lifetime in space.

Lupin's avatar

Ummm…Would I still have Wifi?

cwilbur's avatar

No, I wouldn’t; and I have no interest in procreating, so that suggestion is actually a disincentive.

BluRhino's avatar

Oh Hell yeah!!! Where do I sign up?

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@Facade make that five.

And to answer the question, no I have no desire to procreate; my sperms are all so old that they have dust on them, and are probably expired anyway.

Earth has its problems, the universe is awesome, but I like it here. The last planet I was on (my home planet) dropped me off here because they said it was the most beautiful planet in the Milky Way. I have no reason to disbelieve them.

wundayatta's avatar

Nope. What good is exploration if you don’t bring anything back to the people you left behind? There would have to be a chance of returning for me to even consider it. Also, technology would have to be so much better than it is now. I’m not really the death-defying type.

AstroChuck's avatar

Aww. This is so sweet. C’mon, everyone. I’ll take you all to Del Taco. My treat. :)

boffin's avatar

Does this have any bearing on the In-Laws?

DrBill's avatar

I’m ready, right now, let’s go.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

I don’t want to go, but can I suggest some people I’d like to volunteer for the trip?

filmfann's avatar

Being confined to a small space with nothing but a computer screen, keyboard and procreative sex? Sounds perfect!

f4a's avatar

As of the moment my answer is yes.

Myotis's avatar

In a heart beat the possibility of exploring new places seeing new things and encountering new races would make it all worth while.

filmfann's avatar

@Myotis Welcome to Fluther. Lurve.

Midnighttoker2's avatar

Sure would! I can’t think of a much better way to spend the rest of my life. Strap me in and light the fuse!
