If you could buy a home security sticker without the actual security sysem would you?

Asked by YoKoolAid (2424points) August 31st, 2009

If I were a home invader, seeing a sticker on the outside would probably make me think twice about going any further. So if these stickers were widely available the criminal wouldn’t know if there was really a security system there or not. While having the actual security system guarantees some things, just having the sticker would stop a criminal 9 times out of 10, so would you pay $20 for just the sticker?

Mmm, that’s a good question, lol. I probably would – most times, just saying that there IS a security system would stop criminals. =D

if that became a wide spread thing, people would simply stop paying attention to them and proceed, betting that it was a ruse. it’s like car alarms – who pays attention anymore? people just are irritated that it’s going off. no one runs outside, checking to see what’s happening.

I kinda already did. I have alarm stickers on all my windows, although only about half my windows actually have alarms. No, i won’t give you my address. I don’t know if it’s actually helpful, but it gives me a lovely, and maybe false, sense of security.

If I was really concerned about crime, I’d get an actual home security system.

Then again, the most valuable things I own are either heavy (try getting that 42” TV out the window alone without someone noticing!) or obscure (is a burglar really going to know that that book goes for $500 on eBay?)

@eponymoushipster good point about the car alarm thing, when I hear a car alarm going off I just assume someone just hit their shopping cart into the bumper or mistakely hit the panic button on their keychain, I’m just sayin’ that a security sticker would almost be as good as the real thing.

Well if I lived in Fort Worth, Tx it would probably be a “Dead Serious” sticker.

They already make a ton of dummy cameras. I’d get the dummy stickers, the dummy cameras, the Beware Of Dog sign, the blades that shoot up from the ground whenever someone steps foot on the grass, the trap door on the front porch.. wait, scratch those last two.

I have stickers on a couple of my windows but no security system and can report no break-ins in 26 years. I obtained the stickers when I worked in the security alarm business over 30 years ago. As for break-ins, I’ve not heard of a single one on the entire block which undoubtedly speaks more to the fact that I’m in the hills on a street that dead-ends (so only one way in and out), and very tight, watchful neighbors (including a police officer), rather than the stickers. See ya…Gary aka wtf

Piper_Brianmind's avatar

@sandystrachan Nah. Maybe in the case of crackheads or other drug addicts that would be true. But generally, a thief will not perform his duty unless he (or she) is sure they can succeed.
Getting caught would fit into the category of NOT succeeding.

I was once robbed and the officer told me that having a dog is even more effective than a home security system. Therefore, get a fake dog and put the fake sticker on the dog. Just in case.

i wouldnt buy it for 20….but perhaps 5… :) I think if the concept that there is a possibility of a security thingy, robbers are less liable to go to that home. so yea, most definitely.

My dad has security system stickers but no security system. I think he also has one of those little signs for his yard. I know he ordered them online.

These decals cost less than ten dollars, and you get six of them. I don’t know about their effectiveness, but it would seem to me that someone looking to break into a home probably wouldn’t want to risk setting off a monitored security system. Then again, where there’s a will, there’s a way. I personally think that if someone wants to get into your home badly enough, they’ll figure out a way to do so.

Like @kikibirdjones , I’ve heard that a dog is the best deterrent to robbery.

@eponymoushipster: That’s not true for everyone. My car alarm is extremely un-sensitive, so if it ever goes off, I drop everything and get my ass outside.

I do have all three options: an alarm system, a security sticker (actually a sign in the yard), and not one but two large dogs. We have never been either robbed or burglarized, although someone pushed in our front door one evening while we were watching TV. The dogs had great fun chasing them off.

However, I also know that you can buy the stickers online, but it seems to be for considerably less than $20. Even the spiffy yard sign is only $14.95. I wouldn’t be surprised if some folks did just that.

You can even get stickers and signs from actual companies but those do cost a bit more. Those might deter the smarter thieves a bit better than the fake stickers.

@La_chica_gomela well, naturally there are exceptions, but by and large, most people ignore them now.

That is very expensive. According to the statistics, they are fairly effective in my area. My grandson works for a sticker maker, and they charge considerable less than that.

It serves the same purpose as those dummy video cameras. You can’t tell the difference, but they make some people think twice.
