Where is there a good local black barbershop near Downtown San Francisco?

Asked by Mega91 (58points) August 31st, 2009

I’m an African-American male recently moved over to San Francisco and I need a good place to cut my hair, and since Super-Cuts and other name brand barber shops have no idea what a ‘tape’ is, I need to find a nice place. Any help?

Try searching yelp.com, great for reviews on local businesses. Each city also has it’s own forum.

if tapeing is what i think it it, you may want to ask them to block off

but if im mistaken, then disregard this

By downtown, do you mean the financial district or Civic Center? You won’t find what you want there. Hop the 38 Geary and get off at Japantown. At Divisidero/Geary is the New Chicago. Or you can cross Geary into several blocks of Fillmore District shops where they know the latest ‘urban’ styles

My brother lives in Oakland, on Shattuck real close to Berkeley. Walking or biking up and down that road every day, I must have seen fifty barber shops. Okay, maybe 5, but coming from Pennsylvania where you never see any, I was pretty impressed.

Guess this doesn’t help you, but if you don’t find one downtown you could take the bart across the bay ;) haha

Fillmore st in the renamed “Jazz District” and Divis have shops.

There is also one on McAllister at Divisadero. Not sure of the name, but it’s definitely a spot that is owned by, and seems to cater to African Americans. I agree that you might have a hard time finding something in downtown.
