When did boxers become more popular did briefs?

Asked by jaketheripper (2779points) August 31st, 2009

I was watching the movie adventureland and I thought it was strange during the pool scene that the guy was wearing boxers. then i remembered that the movie is set in the 80’s. This made me wonder when boxers became the norm. or maybe that’s just my personal experience?

When I had to start changing clothes for gym class.

What’s done in movies may not always reflect actual trends. My guess would be that boxers might be a little more modest on a big screen.

it’s all about the boxer-briefs…

I have always been a “briefs” kind of guy. (except for a time when I was commando). Having been a physically active guy all my life, I like the support. I wore boxers for a short (no pun intended) time when I was in service, and did not like them at all. I think boxers became popular when it became popular to show them off.

Boxers came first

Your assumptions are incorrect. Briefs were never popular.

@Lightlyseared In America at least, briefs were the standard when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s. I think boxers were considered old fashioned. It seems to me that in the late 80s and 90s boxers became popular again and then briefs were considered “geeky.”

Well there was that whole thing about overheated sperm having low motility and so many guys confusing their virility with their fertility it was no wonder there was an increased demand for boxers with the airflow to cool off the ‘boys’

That is counterintuitive of course because most guys don’t want to leave a trail of offspring as they wamder down life’s path, you would think they looked at tighty whities as auxilary protection-if she forgets hers and yours fails at least your swimmers wouldn’t have the strength to get into the race.

From strictly a fashion point of view, some butts were made for briefs, everybody else should conceal flaws with boxers

When you got out of high school.

It was about even, until it became popular to sag your pants. At that point, having tighty whities hanging out wasn’t cool.

In our family it was when they started making boxers out of the same stretchy fabric typically used in briefs. Otherwise, the regular boxers were something that grandfathers wore, not young guys.

But in terms of Hollywood, boxers conventionally are used in film because they hide more flaws and because they aren’t as risque as tighty-whities.

~ @Darwin do you really mean risque or do you mean risky~

Darwin's avatar

Yes, I mean risque, unless you are watching this movie

galileogirl's avatar

When it was all about the sags and bags some guys wore 3 pair of boxers at different levels

Strauss's avatar

@galileogirl and then a pair of briefs under all!~

Strauss's avatar

To answer the original question, I think boxers became popular when it became fashionable to sag and show off the boxers.

by the way, did you know that that “fashion” statement has its roots in prison? In many facilities, inmates are not allowed to wear or keep belts.

@Yetanotheruser – Or to have shoelaces, hence the puffy unlaced sneakers.
