Does ketoconazal help cure hair thinning/hair loss?

Asked by Palindrome (1084points) September 3rd, 2009

My hair is thinning and the pharmacist/doctor prescribed ketoconazole. They took a blood test to see if anything else was wrong and everything was fine. Will ketoconazole help cure or prevent the thinning/hair loss?

Never heard of it.

I’ve recently read that xalatan, a glaucoma medication, has been shown to grow hair.

ketoconazole is effective for certain kinds of hair loss, and has been found to be about as effective a Propecia.

“Results so far indicate that both the 1% and 2% dosages have positive hair loss benefits; however the more potent 2% formulation could have better results. Optimal usage is speculated at every third day, leaving the shampoo on the scalp for 3–5 minutes before rinsing.”

There haven’t been any well-done clinical trials, so the answer is a definitive maybe. It probably works because ketoconazole is a weak inhibitor of androgen receptors (like receptors for testosterone), and other androgen inhibitors (like propecia) seem to work. Can’t hurt to try, but be realistic about your chances.

Isn’t this drug primarily an anti-fungal?

@drdoombot: That must be the stuff they have Brook Sheilds pitching on the TV for eyelash growth and thickening. I don’t thik it’s approved for use on the scalp, though.
