Songs about the past? Similar in emotion and feeling (not necessarily sound) as "I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLachlan?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) September 6th, 2009

I’m looking for songs about people singing of their past, in kind of a bitter-sweet way. Lots and lots of clearly heard and felt emotion. As said above, like “I Will Remember You” or “Fields of Gold” by Eva Cassidy.

List one, or (thanks ahead) many.

I Remember by Damien Rice (and Lisa Hannigan).

Hope there’s someone by Anthony and the Johnsons (not entirely a song about the past, but his voice is so unique, emotional and a bit of bitter sweet, it just gets me every time.).

I could go on and on forever, but I’m not really into lyrics and some of my picks might seem farfetched

Okay… I’m ready…

These are some of my favourites by her. All so nostalgic… I recommend them to anyone who’s interested in jazz, emotion and just plain ol’ good music.

The Night We Called it a Day
Maybe You’ll Be There
I Remember You

Lovely voice…

Alanis Morissette – Are You Still Mad

are you still mad I had an emotional affair?
are you still mad I tried to mold you into
who I wanted you to be?
are you still mad I didn’t trust your intentions?
of course you are
of course you are

And I forgot to add two more wonderful songs from her.

I Get Along Without You Very Well – A very bittersweet song.
Love Letters – Something more sweetbitter than bittersweet.

My gosh I never realised the extent of bittersweetness you can find in that particular album…

In My Life- The Beatles

There are places i’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends i still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life i’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When i think of love as something new
Though i know i’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i’ll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more

Though i know i’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i’ll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more
In my life i love you more

Um, I’m such a fangirl.

The version of Wild Horses (by the Sundays) that plays when Buffy and Angel dance for the last time at her prom.

If I remember correctly, they actually used “I Will Remember You” in the episode of the same name…didn’t they?

Not exactly what you wanted, but I felt like hearing it anyway so I both youtubed it and searched the lyric.

Dollie Parton wrote it, Whitney made it famous. Leona et al sang it ad nauseum in the various talent shows. But the lyric is:

I will always love you

If I should stay,
I would only be in your way.
So I’ll go, but I know
I’ll think of you ev’ry step of the way.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
You, my darling you. Hmm.

Bittersweet memories
that is all I’m taking with me.
So, goodbye. Please, don’t cry.
We both know I’m not what you, you need.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.

(Instrumental solo)

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you’ve dreamed of.
And I wish to you, joy and happiness.
But above all this, I wish you love.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I, I will always love you.

You, darling, I love you.
Ooh, I’ll always, I’ll always love you.
