Have you ever remembered a childhood memory that you somehow blocked for many years?

Asked by kheredia (5566points) September 8th, 2009

I know this sometimes happens when you have a bad memory of something that happened to you as a child. In my case, I remember being about 9 or 10 years old and answering the phone. There was a strange man who said that he was from a company who sold underwear and I remember him asking me questions about my breasts and how big they were. I remember feeling embarrassed and telling him I had to go.

That’s really all I remember but for a very long time I blocked this memory from my mind. Has that ever happened to any of you? Have you ever randomly come across memories you didn’t know existed?

Yes I have my aunt does genealogy, and randomly, I remembered a lady that my grandmother had at her house a few times. I was like 4, and I remember she had really long white hair, and she let me play with it. She was a very old and frail lady, and untill friday, I never thought about it. I found out that she was my great great grandmother.

I was molested as a child by a family member. I never repressed the memory, but I had diminished its significance somehow as a coping mechanism. I was in my late 20s when I had a dream that I woke from sobbing… my entire trachea ached and was so dry. That was when the blinders were removed and I realized how I had been treated and the lasting impact it had on my psyche.

When I was I guess 9 or 10 I used to make out and dry-hump with my best friend (I’m a girl and she’s a girl). I lived overseas in Japan and we were 2 of very few black families that lived off the Navy Base nearby so we became best friends. I don’t remember how we started but I think we did it just for fun. She also had a sister who was a year younger than us who would always get jealous that she didn’t get to kiss me, that was weird. I forgot all about this until I was about 16 or 17 and it freaked me out a little bit when I remembered it. I mean, we REALLY dry humped each other alot. Oh to be a kid again….

I was molested, as well. It was until my mid 20’s that I started to remember things—vividly. Sounds and certain situations reminded me of it.

Yes I blocked out an event that happened when I was around 10 or 11 it wasn’t until I was going through an ordeal later in life that my Aunt reminded me of it and I remember the floodgates opening for some time. I still haven’t fully obtained what I was suppose to get of this experience but I am working on it. I do believe that each negative experience that we have is a way to grow from it.

Yes I have, and unfortunately, it was such a very bad one that it caused me to slip deeply enough into a bout of depression that I considered suicide.

Satchel Paige once said, “Don’t look back, something might be gaining on you.” Great advice.

No, that has never happened to me, but I can see why some current event could bring on such a memory.
