What could be the explanation for these odd symptoms on my right arm?

Asked by DominicX (28808points) September 10th, 2009

So for the past two days I’ve had a very strange feeling on the underside of my right arm (the smooth part without the hair). It feels very sensitive. If anything touches it, it hurts, including water. Washing my hands is now a painful experience. There is no redness or any swelling visible to me.

I was doing some yard work the other day, though, and I was thinking maybe I could’ve been bitten by something or somehow been exposed to a plant-related chemical. All I know is that it’s been going on for two days and it’s really annoying. The pain is strongest right under my wrist. I was even thinking carpal tunnel syndrome.

What could explain this?

I agree with poofandmook, see a doctor. Does it feel like a bunch of tiny slivers? Maybe you came into contact with a plant that has tiny sharp fibers. Do you remember comming into contact with insulation; it contains fiberglass shards that can stick into you like slivers. You can’t see them, but you know they are there.

Is it the skin that hurts or something deeper? If it is just contact that hurts, I doubt that it would be carpal tunnel syndrome.

I get those every once in a while in various places around my body – I call them “hot spots” because mine feel very superficial, like only the top layer of skin is effected. No redness, no bruising, no evidence of injury… they usually go away by themselves after a couple days. I never looked into it.

I agree that it deosn’t sound like carpal tunnel syndrome.

@valdasta

Well, the problem is that way I sleep has been known to cause pain in my right arm. I sleep facing the right and I wasn’t able to get much sleep last night so I spent a lot of time just lying facing the right without moving, which only made my arm hurt more. That pain tends to go away, though.

It doesn’t feel like tiny fibers or anything, just a general hypersensitivity. It doesn’t hurt when nothing touches it.

I’m starting to agree as well. CTS often has a “pins and needles” feel. I know pins and needles. This is not pins and needles. I think I’m going to see a doctor, though, because this is kind of freaking me out and I’ve seen the doctor for lesser things.

@DominicX: You might want to go to a dermatologist, if your insurance doesn’t require referrals. Please report back and let me know what they say, because now I’m curious!

I wouldn’t think carpal tunnel with those symptoms, I think carpal tunnel makes it tingly like it’s asleep, and goes to your index and middle finger.
After I had my son, we coslept, and I kept him cradled on my right arm at night. It began to become tingly all the time. I saw a doctor, and he said since it was my pink and ring finger that were tingly, that it wasn’t carpal tunnel, but I think my ulnar nerve.
Yours sounds more skin related. I’d definitely get in to see the doctor to see if they can figure it out! Good luck, let us know what happens

I have had this before as well! Always in the tenderest parts of the arm. Even on my thighs once. It burns almost like a sunburn and is ultra sensitive to touch, even with clothing! I always assumed it was something plant or bug related. It always goes away after a few hours for me!

@ShanEnri: I’ve had it on my face, along the jawline, too.

Well, it’s nice to know something similar happens to other people and that I’m not a complete freak. :P

I told my mom if it didn’t get better this morning, I was going to call the doctor (which I’ve never done before! My mom always did it for me, but now I’m 18 so I have to do it myself).

This morning it was still there but it was lesser. Now it’s gone. I’m not sure what happened, but I do think it had something to with the muscle pain in my arm due to sleeping in a weird position. It’s possible I might have damaged a nerve or something temporarily. I noticed that it was only sensitive to cold water and not warm water, which seemed like something like that; a pinched nerve, maybe. Either way, I’d prefer if it didn’t happen again. :)

@teh_kvlt_liberal You character, you. :)
