Is president Obama working to pull troops out of Iraq or do the opposite?

Asked by w2pow2 (490points) September 13th, 2009

Again, people have claimed that he is putting more troops in Iraq while others claim that he is pulling out of Iraq.

And conservative- republicans… Please speak up. I’ve noticed that Fluther is dominated by Liberal-democrats.

President Obama is following the counsel of his military advisers, and is trying to wrap up a seven-year-long problem not of his making.

In my opinion it is more important that he get our troops out of Iraq, and then that he reframe the issue in Afghanistan away from Nation building and toward a tight focus on Al Qaeda, our true enemy.

He has said that he wants to end the war in Iraq by August 2010. So, far I’m not sure there’s evidence that he’s working on it. I think his main priority at this point is the health care plan. He’s got a lot of issues to face at once, and has chosen to deal with this one first.

If he was pulling troops out of Iraq, the liberal media would take all advantage of it to make him look good. The last I heard, he sent 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan, but not Iraq. That was back in February. February was also when he made the plans to be out by Aug 2010. I haven’t heard anything since. Probably because this health care reform is taking the majority of his time.

Also, I’m not able to find it, but around March or something, he relocated some troops around Iraq and renamed the operation. Does anyone remember what I’m talking about? I can’t find anything on it now, so I may have some of my facts wrong here.

And the proof that supports this claim is what exactly?

(semi off topic) Anyone know about his 25% cut in our military? I have a feeling that would take place after the troops come back, but its still a question… Think its tough finding a job now? Wait till there are 76.5 million more people looking for work =/

@The_Compassionate_Heretic I think what @ubersiren means by what he says is that the lack of evidence that shows Obama pulling troops out is a inverse piece of evidence that he isnt, or at least, not so much as to make a true difference.

Though, i fear its going to get worse before it gets better, last i checked, we werent happy with Iran…. Talk about opening a whole new can of worms…

@The_Compassionate_Heretic : Which part? I’m confused. I tried to make my response as politically neutral as possible. I didn’t include personal opinions, just what I’ve observed.

I was referring to the question not you @ubersiren.
Sorry for any confusion.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic I don’t know of any- that’s why I asked the question.
Can you provide evidence of the contrary?

Last night (Dec. 2nd, 2009, two months after this Q was asked) he said he’s pulling out of Iraq all together, over time, beginning now, and refocusing on our original goal in Afghanistan, of cleaning up Al Qaeda (the guys who bombed the Trade Center.) To that end he’s putting more troops into Afghanistan and taking care of that crap once and for all.
When doing the math, he’s putting 30,000 troops into Afghanistan, but pulling 150,000 troops OUT of Iraq.
