Where will you take your shoes off?

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) September 20th, 2009

I work in a library and I am continually amazed at the number of people who sit down and take their shoes off. I’m not talking about slipping off sandals or a pair of flip flops, I mean people wearing sneakers taking them off, peeling off the socks, and putting their bare feet on the table. Do you take your shoes off in public places?

Not in public.

I don’t, but I go to college and I see it all the time in libraries, study rooms, computer rooms, indoors, outdoors, all over campus.

tbh I’d stink up the room, so no

If I’m wearing flip-flops, they’ll occasionally come off because I’ll be jiggling my leg. But no, in general, I don’t take off my shoes in public.

I do go barefoot a lot while at home, though. :D

I love taking my shoes off. I’ll basically do it anywhere. One time in a restaurant, I took my sandals off, and sat crosslegged in my chair, and the waiter actually told me to put them back on. LOL

I work for the Phone Company, and years ago I would help with Repair work at customers homes. When I came to the door, they would ask me to remove my boots, and I wouldn’t, thought I would put plastic bags over them to avoid tracking anything.
I will take off my shoes at a friends house, if they ask, or if they are barefoot, and it seems comfortable, but that’s it. (ps, i’ve got hideous ingrown toenails)

I pretty much am never without shoes. I wear flip flops or sandals year round unless it snows. The only time I’m without some manner of shoe is if I’m in the shower or in bed.

I hate shoes so I take them off whenever I can, but I would never take my shoes off and put my feet on a table. I’ll take them off in people’s homes, and the beach or park, but that’s about it.

Some of my coworkers walk around without shoes on. It’s weird.

Oh ew, no.
I’m one of the most barefoot people I know and would never consider taking off my shoes and socks in public! I’ll slide out of flip flops occasionally, and I’ll unzip tight boots in a movie theater. But taking off socks? Just nasty.

never in public, ew, gross

Remember the pics of Britney Spears walking in a gas station bathroom barefoot…that really made me wanna gag! I don’t even like going in my own bathroom barefoot!

I always wear shoes, even at home. I have a pair of comfy clogs for ‘around the house’. I can’t imagine taking off my shoes and socks in public (unless we’re talking a pool or the beach).

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@knitfroggy: Oh, I agree! I said I’ll take my shoes off everywhere, I didn’t say I would step on anything barefoot. Gross.

I was just thinking about how you could NEVER step foot on my Grandma Bertie’s rug with shoes on. You made it no farther than the plastic runner right inside the door with shoes on. She was a picky person, I sure miss her.

HAHAH thats so gross, a lot of people have foot odor they aren’t aware of too. Ew.

I only ever wear mocassins and sandals, except MAYBE if it’s blizzarding outside. But I guess I find myself always taking my shoes off without noticing. Oh gee, I’m one of those people I just complained about probably.

@SuperMouse That’s getting pretty close to dropping trou before sitting down in a public place. Taking off one’s shoes is bad enough but putting your bare feet on the table is something most of us wouldn’t do at home YECCHH!!

deni's avatar

I mean, I think I would have to laugh out loud if I saw someone do this. Definitely I would. It’s pretty funny to think about. Still gross though

Likeradar's avatar

So I’m thinking about the people who said they take their shoes off in public, and about why I think it’s gross. What’s so disgusting about feet?

Facade's avatar

If I am wearing heels at a movie theatre, I take them off and tuck my legs up. I’f I’m sitting somewhere and my shoes are easily slipped off, I might partially take my feet out of them. Other than that, they stay on.

In a mosque.

I wear sandals (bare feet) eleven of twelve months a year and occasionaly i take them off.
In the cinema, in a plane, but i never put my legs on the seat in front of me.
To me that’s indecent.

Food tastes better when you’re barefoot. I’ll slip off my shoes if my table in a restaurant is private enough.

justn's avatar

I’ll take my shoes off at home and at my friends homes, but never in public. If I’m wearing sandals I might slip my feet out though.

SuperMouse's avatar

@Likeradar I don’t think it is the feet themselves that are disgusting, it is the fact that they are wrapped in socks and slipped in shoes all day and get sweaty and stinky that is gross. For some reason slipping off flip flops or sandals doesn’t carry the same level of indecency as taking off shoes and socks.

fyi, i take off my shoes at work and try to kick my coworker in the face when no one is looking. (he HATES feet)
I am like a ninja.

btw, for the record, i LOVE feet. I think i should just stop right there…. > : 3

I will very occasionally take off my shoes (not my socks) in my cube at work. (VERY occasionally… like maybe twice a year.) Never socks. And never any other public place. I’ll take them off at someone’s home if they ask (i.e., if they don’t wear shoes inside the house), but that’s not really “public,” I don’t think…
