Building computer, need help?

Asked by iblamecanadians (3points) September 21st, 2009

as of now i found a similar question and am thinking of this setup:

Mobo- GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P
CPU- AMD phenom II x4 955 black edition (3.2GHz)
RAM- 4gb 1066 or 1333mhz
Vidocard-XFX HD-485X-ZDFC Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit
GDDR3
PSU- OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ500MXSP 500W

So im wondering if this setup sounds good? i dont game now, but im thinking of getting into it a bit more, ive never built a computer before, and i probably wont be gaming for a bit, should i wait and let things get cheaper/more advanced or should i go ahead. i probably wouldn’t do much gaming for the next 6months. as far as the setup, my biggest questions are if this mobo is good, if its limiting, or if its more powerful than what i need….also if the video card is good/limiting….any other issues would be good to bring up also, ask and i have links to all the stuff in newegg if ud like them

look fine,

though why the AMD? it sells for about 240 to 250 if im not mistaken. Why not Intels quad core line? You can get a 2.66 quad core for like 180 to 200. more power cheaper price.(for CPUs look at the L2 cache. If its lower than Half the Frequency rating E.g. 2.5 Gh to 1 Mb is no good, 2.5 to 1.5 is just fine)

New egg is a very good place to buy them from, so i trust that end of it will be fine. Just double check that everything is compat. Looking at your Main Board, i can already tell you that if you get DDR333 Ram, your rig will be worthless.

well yea if i went with ddr2 at 1333mhz id be overclocking, and tho ive never done it, im not a stranger to the bios, and from things ive read it dosnt look to be that hard. i had heard mixed reviews about the processors, most places i read however said that intel had the higher performance market with there i7 but AMDs price vs. performance beat intel for most products lower, i also want a processor that has an unlocked multiplier so in a few years when its not running the way i want it to, and ill be a poor college kid, i can just overclock it. and this processor is just under 200 and so is the core2 quad….but the L2 catche that u mentioned, the intel’s is muuuuch larger, id never heard that tho

Its why processors bottleneck. Its more precautionary what i said, but its a very good rule to live by.

And if you over clock, get water cooling. you can crank that bitch up to 11 and still have a comp cold enough to hold drinks. no joke lol.

sounds, good….some more add on questions, the AMD cpu has a small L2 and a L3 the same size as the intel…is 2 levels of caches good? i also saw that the i7 has this so took it as meaning the AMD was just as powerful as the intel core 2 quad…just with a higher frequency for the same price.

is liquid cooling dangerous? and what would a safe kit or buying separate parts cost? how much power would it draw, the AMD proccessor can run up to 400W when fully overclocked, and i plan to buy a 600W psu….would i need to upgrade my psu if i water cool it

finally, would this video card be up to par or could i get something better in that price range?

-thanks for all your help, and patience :D

your Vcard (giggity) is just fine, no further research needed. I have a 512 express and i can run Crysis at med specs.

Water cooling is not dangerous as long as everything is unplugged before you start tampering with it. It is kinda expensive, will prolly be in the $400 range. Freon cooling however is rather unfriendly, and costly, closer to a grand. But if youre going to overclock, you might want to at least get a cheap system from just the CPU. Its almost a must for OCing, but than again i tend to play it safe.

600W should be good, but if you can get a 650W for the same price itll keep you in the green regardless of what you do to it.
