Do you know any website where I can download free audio books? What website do you recommend from your own experience, that doesn’t have any virus?

There are some sites like Gutenberg which have audio books which are in the public domain. Many are read by amateurs, and are primarily intended for the blind, not necessarily for the tight-fisted.

Audible.com/pottercast will give you a free audio book when you sign up for their 2 week trial. Cancel before the two weeks are up and you keep your audio book.

Neat, @MrItty ! Do you know any other cool ways we can rip people off who are performing a service?

MrItty's avatar

@pdworkin uhhh, what? It’s a free trial. You’re not ripping anyone off. If you like it, by all means, stay subscribed, and pay the $14.95. If you don’t think the service is worth it, cancel before your two weeks are up. That’s how free trials work.

It’s not a trial if you don’t intend to try anything.

Check your local library. I’m in Indiana and all the libraries around here have audio books at each branch and if you have a library card you can also sign into netlibrary.com where they have hundreds of audio books available for download of fairly recent books. If you have an mp3 player that is supported for protected wma you can move them to the mp3 player.

Project Gutenberg which is a site that posts out of print, out of copyright books also has audio book downloads. Librivox is along the same lines and volunteers posts their readings of out of print, out of copyright books. I recommend “How to Live on 24 Hours a Day”.

@pdworkin Get a grip. You are trying it. You’re trying the service of getting one audio book a month. If that’s worth the $14.95 for you, you keep it. If not, you don’t. This is what they ARE TELLING YOU TO DO on their website.

@MrItty I live in a world where the reasons we do things matter. I guess you don’t. You may have the last word; I’m done.

MrItty's avatar

@pdworkin The reason you’re signing up for their free trial is to get the free audio book they’re offering. The reason they’re offering a free trial and free audio book is in the hopes that you’ll like their service enough to continue using it. Some peopel will. Some people will not. No one is being taken advantage of.

You can always torrent them. However, pirating digital media is illegal and I do not endorse it.

@five99one Torrent doesn’t necessarily mean illegal. It’s just a format, and a damn good one.

Virus? Can you get a virus from a sound file?

MrItty's avatar

@oratio no, but you can get a virus from something you think is a sound file. If you are one of those people who chooses to hide extentions, for example, and you double-click the icon for what you think is audiobook.wmv but is actually audiobook.wmv.exe, that could be bad…..

You can download Neil Gaiman’s “A Study in Emerald” free from here
It’s a mashup of Sherlock Holmes in an H P Lovecraft universe and Neil reads it himself.

For Sci-Fi there are some great free podcasts that have short stories, such as Starship Sofa

I’m currently listening to Cory Doctorow reading one of his own novels from here

@oratio Oh, I know. I’m just saying, IF pirating were involved I do not endorse it.

Because I am a law-abiding citizen…
