Is an inflamed bruise anything to be concerned about?

Asked by Facade (22937points) September 22nd, 2009

I have a blue bruise from hitting my thigh on a nightstand thing. It’s very warm, tender, and as I said, discolored. I haven’t had frequent bruises since my days of athleticism and do not remember the “rules” about them.
Is there anything I should be doing to it?

If it’s not open, it can’t get septic. It sounds like you ruptured a lot of capillaries. First ice, then heat.

When did you hit your thigh? If it was within say the last 48 or so hours, I wouldn’t be too worried. I think that the body’s normal response to trauma is to cause swelling in the area. It probably feels warm because there is more blood concentrated at the site to help repair and nourish the damaged tissue. You could always apply some ice or cold compress to help decrease the swelling. Gentle massage if not too painful would be beneficial as well. Hope this helps.

I hit it Saturday night. And thanks to the two of you :)

The 4 classic signs of inflammation (as noted by Celsus in the 1st century A.D.):
Rubor (redness)
Calor (heat)
Tumor (swelling)
Dolor (pain)

You can try some ibuprofen to alleviate the pain and inflammation. As long as you take it with food (and don’t have serious underlying medical issues), you can take up to 600–800 mg three times a day for a few days.

The one time ibuprofen might work for me, I empty out my entire “pharmacy” lol. I don’t have any pain killers. I think the ice will do it. Thanks doc :)
