Whats the deal with sunken eyes?

Asked by johnny0313x (1855points) September 22nd, 2009

So lately I’ve noticed my eyes looks very “sunken”? I don’t know if it is coming with age (im 23) Lack of sleep(i’m lucky I get about 5 hours a night) or something else. To give a better example, here is a pick I found via Google image search:

My apologies to whoever this girl is for calling you out like this….

My eyes much like her’s have that line under them almost my it puffs up near the sinus area, although lately i’d say it’s a bit worse then her’s is. I don’t like it at all, does anyone know what could cause this or if there is a way to correct it(without surgery)?

I drink alot of fluid and each vegetables and fruits often.

It’s probably the sleep issue. <5hrs a night is not healthy.

From what I understand this is caused by a nutrient deficiency. Also from what I understand the most common cause of this deficiency is dehydration. So even though you think you drink enough water it may be the case you aren’t drinking enough for your activity level. Lack of sleep is another common cause and may very well be your problem. Having said that there can be more serious causes and if the problem persists it would be worth it to contact your doctor. You may even want to contact your doctor to get ideas on how to get better and longer sleep.

Well my issue with sleep the that there are not enough hours in the day….10 hours of work, come home clean up make food take care of the dog go to the gym work on some personal projects chat with friends and before I know it i’t s 3 or 4 or later in the morning and I have to be up at 8:30 for work. It’s a never ending cycle lol

@johnny0313x Prioritize, yo. I know its hard, and believe me, I would love to see a 27 hour day. But your health should be more important than chatting and personal projects sometimes. :(

Sounds like lack of sleep, maybe dehydration and possibly allergies. You may need to cut out either some personal projects or greatly shorten chatting with friends. You might also consider making bulk amounts of food periodically and freezing it in single portions so all you have to do is warm it up.

As @Likeradar says, prioritize! Sometimes you just have to let some things go.

Can you chat with friends while at work? Do a shorter, more intense workout? Cook in bulk as @Darwin suggested?

I do chat with my friends at work through text so i try and save some time there, as for the workout, I’m still semi-new to all of it so i’m kinda learning the ins and outs as I go.

I would like to cook in bulk but i’m not sure how, I mean obviously you cook alot more and then freeze it but, what can you freeze and what can’t you? You need to wait for meats to cool before freezing right? Would you freeze something like rice that you make with the meat? I’m not the best cook.

I try my best to cut down time where I can, I do think I spend to much time on personal things(atleast right now,I actually think my 10–12 hours work days are what screws me up, but that aint changing) I feel like those extra 2–4 hours of work is where my sleep is.

I think you guys have all given great suggestions so far though!

What could the possible serious causes be?

I am sure it’s the lack of sleep because there are days where I literally feel like I could pass out standing up. I have a tough time sleeping usually too or at least falling asleep. Prescription sleep aids were not a huge help for me though.

That image is mostly to do with lighting. See the light on the back of her shoulders? A fill flash or facing a light source would have eliminated most of it.

Do you smoke weed?

Sunken eyes are caused by brain shrinkage. As it gets smaller, the eyes retract into the head. This can be seen in anyone who stays up late watching television.

Eye sinkage i do not see , what i do see is someone who wants attention and people to look at her

I have the same ‘problem’ underneath my eyes, except that I am only sixteen and have had this look my whole life. A few ways to tone it down is to soothe your face. Lie on your back with a rag saturated with milk for ten minutes. Believe it or not, fresh cucumbers or chilled tea bags really do help some. Stay away from super thick creams or moisturizers, they can irritate it more.
To counteract with makeup, brush lightly with powder—skip the creams or foundations, it will only highlight and draw attention to them. Also, try dabbing white eyeliner on the inside corners of your eyes and on your browline to open up the eyes and draw attention from the undereye circles.

On another note, people with sunken eyes can really rock the cat eyes and the smoky eyes! Drama, you know?

i have this same issue and have noticed, i do feel ill as well, and ive had a low grade fever. I did just recently have surgery and i’ve had some serious anxiety along with it. Its been truly concerning me and others around me. I look dead to say the least. But, however, i’ve been eating properly, sleeping a lot, not really using my mind much cause i feel i’ve been losing some of my memory. I had a cat scan and everything returned back was normal, according to my primary. Also, i was worried it may have been a sign of dementia, he also tested me for that, claiming thats not the case. Its hard to keep my eyes open, theres so much pressure in my head, and my eyes are dark underneath along with the cave looking effect. Is this maybe due to my sleeping habits, or a sinus infection? Please help. I’m very worried. Also, i’d like to add that i’ve been drinking gallons of water, gatorade, etc. thinking it may have just been dehydration, but that isnt the case either.
