Are there any cheap all-purpose bikes at Walmart or Kmart or Target, that are any good?

Asked by Kraigmo (9055points) September 24th, 2009

I am not very picky. I don’t care about how many gears a thing has. 3 Gears is fine for me (I do want at least 3 gears though). Pedal brakes are fine for me. I don’t care how the bike looks or if it’s a woman’s or man’s bike either.

Are there any adult bikes at the stores I mentioned or elsewhere, that are good for just flat-street city biking that are any good?

Both me and my husband have such bikes. We got ours for 50.00 each and so did my brother actually. They’ve lasted a lot longer than our previous bikes which were about 200.00 a piece. We use them for city-biking as well. I think the prices have risen a bit recently but they are still much cheaper than the bike shop.

I would recommend two upgrades however if you buy such bikes.
1. Get some “ooze”. You put it in the tires so that if they get a small hole it heals them. City-biking caused us flats every month and it was getting tiresome. After a bike shop suggested ooze we rarely every get a flat.
2. Get a much better seat. These cheaper bikes often come with really bad seats. Ouch! lol

Oh and another benefit of having a cheap bike in the city is that they are much less likely to be stolen.

Yes, I bought bikes from from Wal Mart for my three grandsons every two or three years. They primarily rode them to the mall and to and from school. I wouldn’t expect one to last any longer than that.

I recently got a bike from walmart that I use around the neighborhood for 100.00. It works great and for what I use it for, it is adequate.
