Should I cover or harvest my tomatoes due to a frost advisory?

Asked by gussnarp (2835points) September 30th, 2009

We have a frost advisory for our area tonight, and I have TONS of tomatoes on the vines. I live in the city and have a smallish yard, houses close together, so I don’t think it will get as cold here as out in the farmland. Will a light frost end my tomato harvest? Should I try to cover them with sheets, harvest them green, or just leave them and hope for the best?

If you have any that are ready to be harvested, take them . Then with cover the rest up with a sheet or something. I am going to be doing the same exact thing with my garden tonight, for the same reason.

Boy, it’s been a bad year for the tomaters! Yes, do exactly as @brinbear says. Here’s extra info on what to do from the good people of Purdue University.

Yes to covering, but assume the worst. I got six edible tomatoes from my plants this year.

We avoided the blight this year, in spite of cool, wet weather. We also had a late frost advisory after the plants were in the ground, I ignored it and we ended up not getting frost. Whew. We’ve only gotten to eat a few tomatoes so far, were out of town for two weeks and our house sitter got the tomatoes. They made salsa and left us some, but it went bad before we go to it. Next: teach house sitter how to can salsa.

My dad always picked them all, wrapped some in newspaper and they did ripen quite well, not as nice as on the vine but not bad.

The totally green and hard ones he put into a crock with water, salt and garlic and made garlic tomatos. They were extremely potent and good!

If you want to leave them on the vine, covering them will help if it doesn’t get too cold and stay cold too long.

I harvested everything with any color in it, and they were all good. I covered the garden with sheets, and then the frost never came.

@gussnarp I wish I could have said the same. We have had two frost advisories out here, that have hit, but the garden is still doing good.
