Does anyone have any thoughts on Carleton or Vassar College?

Asked by lifeisthegamethatmustbeplayed (12points) October 2nd, 2009

I am considering visiting one of the two over fall break. My question(s) is very open-ended:What are the positives and negatives of each? Which would prove more helpful when applying to graduate, more specifically, medical school? Thoughts and questions are all welcome.Thank you in advance!

I recommend taking a look at the “Insider’s Guide” series of books that deal with colleges. Probably more informative than the opinions of Flutherers on this topic.

I almost went to Carleton, but at the end of the day I didn’t think I could stand a Minnesota winter. My two cents though, is that if you’re interested in pre-med, you may want to look at better state schools with good biology programs. A liberal arts pre-med degree will get you to the MCATs, but a good biology degree from a major research institution may open up a lot more opportunities for you.

That said, Carleton is a great school and has a great ultimate frisbee program.

I go to Carleton!

I am a 2nd year undergrad living on rez. It is amazing! at least for undergrad. It seems that all the attention is going towards us, and that very little is given to the grad students.

For grad school I’m gonna go to McGill because they really focus on grad school and they excel in med school. They are partnered up with so many hospitals! The Jewish General, Royal Victoria, St Mary’s, Montreal General, and so many others are collaborating with med students. My dad is Chairman of Oncology at McGill and teaches a course for grad students.

McGill also has a good name that is known throughout the world.

And best of all, it’s relatively cheap! Quebec schooling is the cheapest in North America.

If you do come to Carleton, maybe we can meet up. Bring your Fluther shirt so we can recognize each other.

@Mtl_zack I think it may be a different Carleton. There’s one in Minnesota as well

@lifeisthegamethatmustbeplayed, those are two very different schools. Have you given any consideration to Oberlin? When we were looking at colleges for my older daughter, I was amazed by Oberlin.

@PandoraBoxx When he mentioned Quebec I think he was talking about McGill, not Carleton.

@lifeisthegamethatmustbeplayed Ohio State has a great medical program—you should look into it! http://medicalcenter.osu.edu/viewer/press/Pages/index.aspx?NewsID=4958
