Can you help me with my icing dilema?

Asked by Tink (8673points) October 3rd, 2009 from iPhone

I made cupcakes but I don’t have an icing to go with them.

I tried to make my own out of powdered sugar but it tasted too much like nasty butter.
Do you have any icing recipies I can make that are easy and fast? Personal favorites?

@icehky06 I don’t think we have cream cheese :( but thanks 

@sandystrachan Do I have to sift the powder or can I just put it like that?
Sure

What flavor of cupcake will the icing be accompanying? (and do you LOVE lemons?)

sandystrachan's avatar

I normally sift it , tho its not a must as you bash the lumps anyway

Tink's avatar

@Beta_Orionis The cupcakes flavor are the funfetti kind, vanilla with some sort of colorful sprinkles in them. (yes lemons are okay)

@sandystrachan Alright, I’m not sure about the measurements you provided, I use cups and teaspoons.

@Tink1113 This should help with the conversion

Lemon Icing. No butter, super lemony. Zest is not a must, but it helps immensely with the lemon flavor.

Tink's avatar

@Beta_Orionis I will give that a try next time.
@all Thanks!

I finished them already, I used a buttercream flavor and added food coloring.

@Tink1113 Buttercream in the right proportions is also delicious. Glad you found a working icing!

I know I am late, but I was going to suggest Flour Frosting. I will go ahead and post it in case someone can use it later. It’s not overly sweet, which is why I like it.

⅓ cup flour
1 cup milk
½ cup shortening
½ cup margarine
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla
¼ teaspoon salt

Blend flour and milk in a small saucepan, stirring constantly until mixture bubbles. Cool completely. In a large bowl, cream shortening, butter and sugar with a mixer until fluffy. Blend in vanilla and salt. Beat in cooled flour mixture in small portions (teaspoonful at a time) on medium speed. Beat well after each addition. Continue beating until light and fluffy.

½ cup (1 stick) butter 120 g
½ cup Crisco (no substitutes) 120 g
1 teaspoon vanilla 5 mL
4 cups powdered sugar, sifted 400 g
2 tablespoons milk 30 mL

Cream butter and Crisco until well blended. Beat in vanilla.

Add sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, blending well after each addition. Beat in milk to finish consistency.

@PandoraBoxx That is the frosting I used, exactly the same one!

Did you use real butter or margarine? Margarine is nasty.

Tink's avatar

I used one stick of butter and ½ cup of Crisco, margarine is nasty.

Jeruba's avatar

Crisco what? Oil? Or shortening?

Tink's avatar

@Jeruba Crisco shortening

andrew's avatar

What is shortening anyway? Fat?

Tink's avatar

Better than butter IMO
