Does anyone have a leather couch and can tell me if they've had good luck with it and their dog?

Asked by lbus1229 (338points) October 7th, 2009

We have three dogs (English Bulldog and 2 Pugs) and would really like to get a leather couch. Our dogs spend a decent amount time on our couch and we are worried that if we get a leather couch they will puncture it with their claws. I also recognize that leather is probably the most durable and easy to clean if our dogs get dirt on it. Any suggestions?

We have a leather Chesterfield and some side chairs but the dog is not allowed on them – he isn’t allowed on any furniture. He has the floor, referred to by family members as the “Dog Shelf”. The dog has certain areas of the house where he is allowed and he understands where they are and won’t go anywhere else.

Leather and dogs was not a good mix for us when we tried it. They did not like the feel of it (or perhaps the smell). they scratched it when on it. The love seat and chair were given to us. We got rid of them and I would not get it again.

Slightly off-topic, my cat sleeps on my leather furniture and prefers to shred the cane webbing in my dresser drawers.

Our dog thought the leather chair I received from Freecycle was a chew toy. I’m glad I didn’t buy a new one.

I had a leather foot stool that our American Bulldog ate. I had another one that my cats shredded. It may not be the best idea for you if you plan to let the dogs get on the furniture.

Our dog was never allowed on the leather or any furniture. Of course, it didn’t seem like she ever had any desire to climb on the furniture, so maybe it was a moot point.

Our dogs own our furniture, like this.

We have 3 dogs, a cocker spaniel, a miniature Schnauzer, and a Labrador-Golden Retreiver mix. We have a leather sectional in the family room. Dogs an couch get along great. They use it more than we do and it has no stains, rips, tears or punctures.

Our dogs tend to get excited when someone comes into the house and will run and jump on and from the couch. Still nothing. No problems… go get that couch!

Exhibit A, B and C.

I think it depnds on the leather, my dog is only allowed on our leather sofa if there is a blanket down for him, as our leather sofa scratches easily. My mums leather sofa on the other hand gets used and abused on a regular basis through both dogs and children and there isn’t a mark on it!!!
