Very few- if any- places will truly give you top for anything if you’re not already informed about what your things are worth. Do some research on their value, then try to sell them. It will help you not get screwed.

Make friends with a dealer and fine out from him, or do the research yourself by looking at ebay and reading the collector books. Join a collector website.

I don’t know how accurate their pricing is but as a last resort, there’s always BlackBorder.com which gives card pricing. I say last resort because they sell at a very very high price but buy from you at a sucky price. Stores and dealers might be a better option.

If you’re not interested in examining all the cards to find out what you’ve got and what they’re worth, go to a MTG tournament (if there still are any), a dealer, or a collectors’ event and see if someone will make you an offer for the whole lot. What’s the likelihood that your source has already pulled out all the valuable cards before handing the rest over to you?

@Jeruba: Not as likely as you might think. Some people just want to get rid of their collections and will sell them cheap or just give them away.

I would suggest going to a local card shop and asking to see their buylist. This is a list of cards that they buy and how much they buy them for. Card shops tend to buy cards for about half of what they sell them for so if you have a card that they’re selling and they sell it for ten, you’ll most like get four or five for it.

Also, go through the rares. Nobody cares about the commons and uncommons (well, a very few are worth something but those are kinda hard to find) so pick out the rares and set them aside and try to sell them first. Keep the cards in as best condition as you can. A lot of places will not buy cards from you if they’re not in near-perfect condition. This is a good website to check the prices of cards on. This site will help you figure out what the rarity of the cards are. If the cards are from before a certain set (I can’t remember which) they all have black symbols, which nowadays mean common. Breakdown of rarities:
Black: Common
Silver: Uncommon
Gold: Rare
Orange: Mythic Rare

If you’re not sure how to check for rarity, look for the symbol on the right hand side of the card between the picture and the text box.

If you have any other questions, PM me and maybe I can answer them. :)

I knew there was someone on here who was up on MTG, but I didn’t remember who. GA, @KG.

I guess we didn’t ask which the questioner was most interested in: making the most money possible from the sale of the cards, finding them a good home, or just unloading them. Different purposes would point to different strategies.

@Jeruba: I know entirely too much about buying and selling cards. It sounds like this asker wants to make as much money as he can. Thanks for the GA!
