What is the most awkward word or phrase in the English language?

Asked by inkvisitor (660points) October 8th, 2009

This is in response to Hobbes’ question What is the most beautiful word or phrase in the English language.

And yes – the phonology/pronunciation of the word/phrase, not the meaning.

I’ll start – pedagogy.

banana hammock. I don’t care what you say, as soon as that phrase enters a conversation it becomes extraordinarily awkward….

awkward just looks well… awkward….

Chthonian

I also find it interesting that apoplectic, chthonian, and pedagogy all come from Greek. Maybe Greek gives us awkward words.

Other ones are the classic “dirty sounding” words like angina, exacerbate, masticate, penal, etc.

“Will you marry me?” is a pretty awkward phrase if the answer is no.

Onomatopoeia is an awkward looking word. And how about hors d’ oeuvres?

@wendolpho yay! I’m also quite fond of the awkward “Janey Jimplin” and “Jackie Jormp-Jomp” :D

queef
i hadn’t heard that since high school and someone said it on the tv today

DominicX's avatar

@Dr_C

“Queef” is pretty awkward, though I will admit that I have been desensitized to it by that South Park episode…

Dr_C's avatar

@DominicX would that be the episode where Mr. Garrison gets a sex change and while asking for an abortion says he can just “queef” out the fetus?

DominicX's avatar

@Dr_C

Ewww…lol…actually this was the one where a new Canadian TV show called “The Queef Sisters” becomes a sensation. It’s about two women who do nothing but queef for the entire program and then when queefing gets banned because all the men find it disgusting, it becomes an issue of sexism and equal rights…lol…oh, South Park… :P

“Indefatigable”.... Just say it. The “d” “f” “t” and “gable” are just SO awkward to pronounce…
