When Ross and Rachel were 'on a break!' and he slept with the copy girl...who's side were you on?

Asked by saraaaaaa (2317points) October 9th, 2009

Sorry for the long question but I’m curious as to who’s side you were on when Rachel and Ross split up for a night, and he slept with someone that night? And why?
I could probably have made this a simpler question but I wanted the context and have just finished watching said episode

WE WERE ON A BREAK! I’m with Ross. If two people are not together then it’s impossible to cheat.

Do I think he was a cad for it? Yes. One night broken up and already on to the next person. That doesn’t sound like love.

I’m on Ross’ side.
1) THEY WERE ON A BREAK!! (aka not together)
2) I’d fuck Ross too, I don’t blame the copy girl.

Rachel, because Jennifer Aniston is having a tough time lately. :(

They were on a break. As much as I am a woman and think it was in really bad taste for him to go out and sleep around I have to take Ross’ side. Now I do understand her being disgusted with just how quickly he picked someone else up because that is just not relationship healthy or good for the self-esteem but it certainly wasn’t cheating.

@Grisaille My heart goes out to that girl, she does seem to get the rubbish end of the famous stick

I had a girlfriend once who slept around with other guys, but these incidents always occurred when we were on a “break” (we had many of these during our long and tumultuous relationship). She used this excuse to justify her behavior, while it only cemented for me why she was not “the one.”

At the time when I saw the above-mentioned Friends episode, I was on Ross’s side. But as much as I am annoyed with the character Rachel, I’m with her on this one.

I’m with Ross… they were on a break. Having said that I would gladly volunteer to cheer up Ms. Aniston in any way necessary… (the sexier the better).

If they were on an official break, then it’s not cheating.

This happened to me in a relationship, and then I got back together with the original boyfriend (I guess Rachel in this case? as I was the one who did the sleeping? lol) The guy knew about it, accepted it, and forgave me…although he does still say it was technically cheating. obviously we got over it and married haha

I didn’t even care who was right and who was wrong. I just wanted them to get together. And I loved Ross yelling WE WERE ON A BREAK!

I would take Ross’s side, because he would’ve asked “whose side were you on?”, I’m sure.

Even the stranger on the airplane in whom Rachel confided knew the right answer to this question.

I was on Rachel’s side, but I will say this: They never set any rules out. Although I don’t believe in breaks for this exact reason, they never work. I don’t like in between relationships.

Ross, because the copy girl was hotter.

Both. She shouldn’t have had Mark over for comfort (when it was a thing that bothered Ross sooo much), he shouldn’t have slept with the copy girl. They were broken up but it was like… a few hours before, not even a day. Ross was also at a disadvantage for being drunk off his ass. I thought they should have both shut up over it. I thought they were even.

There were on a break, but it wasn’t a very smart move if he didn’t want the break to become permanent. It couldn’t have made her feel like he cared much about her, but he probably did it because he was feeling like she didn’t care about him. I can see both sides. My brain is with Ross but my heart is with Rachel.

I agree with @SarasWhimsy that I love the way Ross yelled that every time the subject came up.

I was one Ross’ side. Correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t it Rachel that wanted to be on a break in the first place?

MissAnthrope's avatar

Ditto what Supacase said. Yeah, they were on a break, so technically he couldn’t be faulted. But they were barely broken up and if he were truly, madly in love, he wouldn’t have wanted to sleep with anyone else. Alternately, if he had hopes of getting back together, that was not the way to do it. I think I sided with Ross due to the technicality, but I also really felt for Rachel, because I know I’d feel the same way.

Iclamae's avatar

Does no one remember the trigger for Ross getting completely wasted? Mark being in the apartment when Ross was on the phone. I don’t blame him or her for what happened. It was a huge misunderstanding that they both should have been able to look back on and go “we both messed up”

Might I say, as an aside, that I think it’s really funny we’re having this whole discussion about a couple of fictional characters? :P

I can understand Rachel’s logic of the argument, because Ross is just being technical, and yes, under certain circumstances I might be with her on this. But in the particular debate I’m with Ross, because he doesn’t really know of Rachel’s feelings. They weren’t just “on a break”. As far as he could see, it was over. But as Rachel says some 2000 episodes later, “it’s never over between us” (or something along those lines).

Which I guess is what makes the debate interesting enough to last several episodes.

Tragic irony.

Love this question, it was always an underlying theme in the episodes that followed and I thought it was hilarious whenver Ross shouted we were on a break too!

I think Ross wasn’t right sleeping with another but hey, they were on a break so I guess he wasn’t cheating just a bit over keen on getting his leg over when he was drunk!!!

Lurving this discussion :0)

Ross, because Rachel was the one who ask for a break, and when Ross called her(way before the copy girl)Mark was with Rachel, and Ross was really jealous of Mark.
