Best Wireless Router for video-streaming?

Asked by serendipity (225points) October 11th, 2009

Sorry for what is probably a seemingly simple question but I’d like to get a wireless router for my laptop. I do alot of video streaming and might play some highend games on it. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with a 1390 wlan mini-card—what would be the highest level router (g, n or n+) that I could use? Any suggestions would be appreiciated.

Thanks!

To be honest, there’s not an aweful lot that a wireless router can do to improve either of those things these days. Most online games are optimized for a median connection of fairly midling DSL. If you have anything better than that, you’re good to go. The shenanigans of opening ports and limiting traffic all went away about 3 years ago. If you have a console, most of those only support G right now. As far as ease of use and quality of connection, I’ve used a Linksys wireless G router for years. Ole Blue, with her dual antennaes, has not steered me wrong yet. Set up is a simple, one-and-done affair, and the WAP security is easy to install. If you need a deal on one lemme know.

I would suggest Linksys WRT610N (dual band version) for you, according to my good experience with that.

If you will use do a lot of gaming, you should get a gaming router. I had onced purchased a D-Link router that wasoptimized for X-Box Live. Check what your game console recommends. Also, check out D-Link website for their latest gaming router(s).
