What is a blender that really crushes ice and frozen fruit?

Asked by johnfromberkeley (10points) October 12th, 2009

our oster blender is horrible, you have to stir it around with a spoon a thousand times. i need one like jamba juice, where you put the ice or frozen fruit in, and it just blends in one minute or less.

Get a blender from Blendtec. Aren’t those the kind they used on “Will It Blend” to blend iPods and crazy stuff like that? I’m assuming they’re crazy expensive though.
We have this in our house and have never had any issues.

We just bought this kitchenaid 5-speed blender . That link shows it for $129, but you can find it for $99 (we bought ours at Bed, Bath and Beyond, and then you can usually get another 20% off). It’s FANTASTIC. It crushes ice for margaritas in no time at all, and makes wonderfully creamy smoothies. It’s also the Cooks Illustrated (America’s test kitchen) top-rated blender. I can’t recommend this blender enough!

I’m not sponsored by kitchenAid, i just REALLY love this blender

I agree with @pdworkin – my kids got me that one (but in silver) so I could make them smoothies out of orange juice, frozen bananas and other frozen fruit. It works beautifully. The only thing I don’t like is that the cap has warped slightly so you have to hold it in place as you blend. But it chews through just about anything.

We killed my previous blender by using it at a Girl Scout meeting to make pulp from which we made handmade paper.

Another one with an awesome reputation is Vita Mix. It can even pulverize Avocado pits.

But the price is pretty daunting so if you just want to do smoothies it may be overkill.

However, this is the one used on Iron Chef and a lot of other Food Network shows.

Vita-Mix is expensive, but it does work great. I use mine regularly.

I have a Kitchen-Aid blender. It crushes frozen fruits really well. I have not tried to crush ice, but I imagine that it could handle it nicely.

I have just finished doing research on a new one out called the Ninja Master Prep.

Several folks (as well as bloggers who received one for evaluation) have been favorably impressed that it has lived up to it’s infomercial claims. It actually turns ice cubes into fluffy snow and with onions, tomatoes and other veggies it produces an even dice rather than a combination of chunks and mush.

Evidently it’s the fact that there are blades at different heights that makes the difference.

The lowest price I’ve been able to find is around 40 bucks when using one of their 20% discount coupons. Within the next day or so, I shall likely be running my own personal tests and let you know.

EDIT. The coupon mentioned is specific to Bed Bath and Beyond.

On the products own website it’s 20–30 bucks more.

My husband and I use our Vita Mix all the time – it really does blend ice and frozen fruit very well. If you’re looking for something like Jamba Juice, this is your best bet – they use commercial standard Vita Mix blenders :)
