What is the purpose of the crease down the front legs of a pair of pants (and another crease related question)

Asked by tinyfaery (44085points) October 12th, 2009

…and if I buy a pair of pants with a crease in them do I have to keep it? Are the pants somehow made to have that crease?

I just want to know why I spend my time trying to keep the crease in line when I iron my pants. Is there a purpose?

I felt so liberated when I realized I didn’t have to keep ironing that fucking crease every time (which inevitably created two dumb looking creases). Now I iron everything along the seam (chino style). The crease is permanent anyway, so no loss. Not sure if chicks’ pants are different.

It depends. Some creases will always be seen even if you try to iron them out. I normally keep the crease and keep it sharp if it’s in a pair of pants I buy. I tried ironing a crease out of a pair of jeans once, and I was left with a faded line down the front of them so… Try it if you like

Some creases are permanent, some aren’t. I don’t even iron my pants, if I can help it! Just take them out of the dryer right away.

Maybe this is just a work clothes thing? None of my clothes even have this.

I think the crease looks professional, but it’s got to be a huge pain to maintain it.

I am horrendous with an iron nor do I have much patience for it so I tend to look for clothing that doesn’t have extra creases and doesn’t lend to wrinkling much (and like @augustlan I dry and remove quickly).

Creases=professionalism. People buy pants with creases for work or a dressy occasion (i.e. Funerals, weddings, formal parties, dinner). If you aren’t planning on attending any of these things, then sure, iron that shit right out.

Creases give a clean, crisp appearance. I don’t mind them one bit; a crisp, perfectly ironed pair of slacks feel and look good.

That said, there are some anti-wrinkle pants that are hot-folded (or whatever) when they are manufactured so that the creases are permanent. Be weary; generally, these pants are of synthetic-feeling (and looking) material.

I hate that crease.
I iron them out and make sure the dry cleaner knows that too.

Sometimes you feel like a crease, sometimes you don’t..
