Are there any new/recent/upcoming live action Mecha movies?

Asked by itsnotmyfault1 (203points) October 12th, 2009

I’m referring to a time frame between 2000 and 2011. Does not have to be adapted from an anime/manga. Transformers is not included (because I know that one already).
Also: possibly high budget CGI’s (Appleseed Ex Machina was awesome, though i didn’t see the original).
Must be a movie.

James Cameron’s Avatar will have mechanized battle suits. Aren’t plot centric, but they are in there.

‘Robotech’ as re-imagined by Tobey Maguire’s production outfit. No ties to the original Japanese Macross, I imagine.

The CGI B-movie ‘Transmorphers’.

Steven Spielberg’s ‘War of the Worlds’ had the giant 3-legged tripods and they were piloted by aliens.

‘District 9’ from Neill Blomkamp has an excellent mecha battle scene, better than anything that was shown previously in any movie. He was supposed to make ‘Halo’ though but he decided otherwise.

‘Matrix Revolutions’ first showcased the Armored Personnel Units patrolling the gate to Zion. Then they went all bad-ass in ‘Matrix Revolutions’ with their dual machine guns. They were badly armored and offered little for the pilot’s safety.

I read somewhere that the Independence Day producers are considering a ‘MechWarrior’ or ‘BattleTech’ movie sometime in the future. Hopefully they won’t use the Macross Destroids on this one. FASA got legally smacked by Big West for that one. And alleged owner Harmony Gold is adding salt to injury on the MechWarrior game showcasing the redesigned Destroid Tomahawk AKA Excalibur AKA Warhammer. Robotech fans, your fiction was bastardized from the start.

‘Robot Jox’, if you still care about post-80’s mechstuff.

Weta Works wanted to do ‘Evangelion’, live-action and all. I think they still want to do it. They’re known for King Kong & Lord of the Rings.
