My dog is sick, could i do something without taking her to the vet?

Asked by 20kc09 (48points) October 14th, 2009

My dog has been sick for a few days now. She’s been throwing up, laying around, shivering, and not eating. Is there anything i can do for her?

I’d take my dog to the vet after more than one day of vomiting and fever. Period.

You should make certain she is well hydrated. Low Sodium soup broth is a good way to encourage drinking more fluids. She should have a blanket to keep her warm, too.

Do you know why she is throwing up? Does she have a virus? A bacterial infection?

Animals need doctor care when they are ill, more readily than humans…WHY? Because they can’t tell us they’ve eaten poison, nor can they say “I’ll be okay if I just sleep it off for a day”.

A vet would get a blood sample, stool sample, and take her temperature and could most likely diagnose her during the same visit, then give you antibiotics or some other meds to help her get better quickly.

It could be so many things, take your dog to the vet. It could be serious.

take it to the vet, if you felt that bad, you’d go to the doctor!

I think she’s been throwing up because of something she ate. and i think she got it from one of my neighbors because of how it is. i really would take her to the vet asap but it costs a lot and i can’t afford it right now. and i’m afraid it’ll be too late when i do get the money..

@20kc09 The best way to look at this situation: Your dog has the brain of a two year old child. If this were your two year old human child, you’d take her to the doctor, right?

Vets have PAYMENT plans. Let them know when you call for the appt that money is tight and that your dog needs care for vomiting.

I’ve just spent £200 on my dog, he cut his paw in the local stream, it cost £135 to stitch him up and the rest on bandages over the following 2 weeks. A lot of money, but he is like a family member and I couldn’t see him suffer

i’m definitely going to see what i can do. she’s about 11 years old and i’m thinking that may be some of the problem too. thanks guys!

@SpatzieLover is right. If your vet won’t let you bill the visit, call around. You should be able to find someone who can see you today.

@20kc09
NO. Your dog’s age is not playing into her vomiting. One of my dog’s is 16. If he vomited or showed signs of a fever, I’d think “Uh-oh! He’s gotten a virus or bacterial infection” and would call the vet immediately. If it were one of my 7yr old “puppies” I’d give it ONE day, then I’d make a call and get in the same day. Period!

If you can’t afford the care, you need to call the vet and tell them that. They will do what they can to save you money and to diagnose the dog’s cause of illness.

Vet care is part of the expense and responsibility of owning a dog. If you have/had a regular vet they will usually allow you to pay in installments.

You must take doggy to vet. If he ate something bad, it’s even more important. Not to mean or dramatic, but you could be watching your dog die.

sakura's avatar

If your vet has a heart they will let you pay them back in installements, ask, they can only say no, but they may surprise you and say yes!

thanks a lot for all your help. i’ll call the vet and see if they’ll let me do payments.

@20kc09 All three of the vets offices I take my pets to have LARGE postings up stating that they prefer customers tell them about their financial troubles first…this let’s them know upfront what services you’ll be able to afford. They understand their is a financial crisis. So does the Humane Society——A lot of animals are in need of homes by me!

Good luck to your girl…I hope the vet can help her in a jiffy!

@20kc09 I hope your dog feels better soon xx

Please take your dog to a vet.

galileogirl's avatar

Take her to the vet or dig her a hole in the back yard

scamp's avatar

I hope your dog gets well soon, and the vet doesn’t charge more than you can afford.

Please ignore the unwarranted rudeness from galileogirl Not all Flutherites are so insensitive.

so i called the vet earlier and they said he wasn’t in and to call back in the morning. about 30 minutes later my dad came home and said she died. i had been trying to get my mom to take her but kept saying we couldn’t afford it then i finally talked her in to calling today. i guess it was just too late.. =/

@20kc09 I’m so very sorry. My heart goes out to you.:(

Capt_Bloth's avatar

That’s terrible, Im very sorry.

:(

Something for you to keep in mind. Do not get a pet if you cannot afford vet care.

Unfortunately for your dog, she should have been seen by a vet the first day she was ill. It is possible that she could have been cured. However, it is also possible that your neighbor poisoned her.

Do not get another dog until you know you can afford to take it to the vet.

In all fairness to the asker, there are times when things happen and we are short on cash. One can never know when an emergency of this type can happen. I think he or she may be a minor, and still under her parents roof, he/she said the Mother said no about calling the vet, so we really shouldn’t be so hard on him/her. Especially now, while the grief is so heavy.

tinyfaery's avatar

I’m not being hard on anyone. This person should learn from this tragedy. That is all I was pointing out.

20kc09's avatar

actually i’m 18, and yes i do still live with my parents. i was thinking the same thing with the neighbors, but i’m not sure. and we were going to try to take her tomorrow if the vet was in his office. these things happen i guess..

SpatzieLover's avatar

@20kc09 I’m so sorry for your loss. My condolences.

sakura's avatar

@20kc09 That is so sad, it is horrible to loose a pet, they are like part of the family, I only hope that they didn’t suffer too much.

Sometimes dogs cannot be saved even if you can take them to the vet. Try not to feel like it is your fault. My grandson works for a vet, and they lose pets to fatal illnesses every single day of the week.

However, please do not get another pet unless you are able to get vet care whenever needed.
