Which are the best self tanners to buy on the market?

Asked by CaseyWVU10 (550points) October 15th, 2009

I am trying to buy a self tanner and I want one that will look natural. I have seen my friends use self tanners and they look like they have eaten too many carrots, they look orange and unnaturally bronze. I use the Jergens natural glow as it is now, but I am looking for a tanner that will take effect in an hour (give or take) and one that will give me a truly natural healthy looking tan. Any feedback or suggestions on the tanners out there would be great. I would be willing to spend more money if say a clinique tanner is better than a Coppertone tanner you’d find at Walmart.

I used a L’Oreal one a few years ago; I thought it was pretty good. Haven’t bothered since then though.

You could try the spray on tan that they have at the tanning bed places. They only last 6 or 7 days but I’ve seen them on girls at work and they look pretty good. I think the price was around 30 dollars.

I usually use Jergens. It doesn’t smell all that great, but it fades after about 5 minutes.
It takes about 3 days to notice a change in your skin tone at the start, but I think it’s worth the wait. It doesn’t turn orange unless you use too much either.

@CaseyWVU10 I’ve tried a bunch. Loreal gives good color, as do the Neutrogena ones
Jergens, Orange streaks same with Coppertone.

Spray tans are best done at a SPA known for doing them…otherwise you can turn out looking like a Cheetoh.

Clinique…worth trying even at the higher price. It’s not so “orangey” I also recommend their bronzer. They have one for men that works REALLY well!

Personally, with ALL of these, I first put a good absorbent lotion on my hands, knees, elbows & feet (after a good scrub in the bath). Then, I mix the tanner or bronzer into a lotion that absorbs quickly. I find this way you get less streaking and fast results without smelling like urea (Yuckie-poo).

St Tropez (I hope I spelt that correctly?) is the best.

I also like Nivea oddly it is very good (the spray one). I also have tried Marks & Spencer’s which is also a spray on. Niveas cellulite cream also works by the way.

Lancomes self tanners are great too.

why not try the injection tan?

@Just_Justine: What is the injection tan?

Just_Justine's avatar

@CaseyWVU10 it is literally a tan that is injected into your body. It lasts ages and you go browner over a period of days. A few of my body builder friends are on it. I will find out more if you like? It is quite well known over here (South Africa) but a lot don’t want to try it as it is so new.

@Just_Justine: Yeah, I just read an article on it and it seems like the side effects are enough to scare me off :( But the fact that it reduces your chance of getting sunburned is amazing to me. I had never heard of this before…very interesting
