I am thinking about moving and need some suggestions for cities-abroad or within the states. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Asked by Jobes32 (132points) October 17th, 2009

I am a 26 year old female who was born and raised in Pennsylvania. I currently work and live in San Diego and have for the past three years. I work as a speech pathologist, mostly children with autism. I am looking for a young/fun crowd, culture, and a city that has a bit more soul to it that San Diego.

San Francisco, and you will find need for your skills here.

Welcome to Fluther! I am an Audiologist (working in the Philly ‘burbs), with my BS in Speech/Language Pathology.

There are opportunities for SLPs just about everywhere, including travel options. The Advance magazines and the ASHA Leader have tons of ads in the back; as well as job listings on their websites.

You haven’t said much about what your interests and hobbies are – that might help us make suggestions that are better-suited to your lifestyle.

I agree that San Francisco might be a good option, and Chicago might be nice, too. New Orleans and that area would also have a lot cultural flavor. Many of my friends really like Boston, too.

Agreed with @filmfann . Autism rates are uncommonly high in the Bay Area, and there are widely varied communities, enough so that you’re sure to find one you like…

You might want to look into Portland Oregon. I currently live in Portland and I have lived in San Diego. I felt the same way as you do about San Diego when I lived there. In Portland damn near everyone is friendly and there is a ton of artsy/music stuff to do.

And it is a hell of lot cheaper than SF. We pay 1200 per month for a big 3 bedroom house. And it has a huge basement that I live in. It is great if you can deal with the rain.

Berlin. Capital of the greatest country in the universe.

You could come up North to Eugene, Oregon (just south of where @johnpowell is suggesting). It is a bit smaller, perhaps too small compared to San Diego. It has a very interesting culture and a very accepting community. The culture contains a lot of liberal hippies so if you like that attitude then you’d love it. There is also a great company here called EC Cares that hires quite often. They work with speech pathologist and other workers to help children in early childhood who have ‘disorders’ such as autism.
