How do you restart a Vaio Windows Vista Business program with corrupt file?

Asked by DarlingRhadamanthus (11273points) October 25th, 2009

I need help…I hope someone out there can help this non-techo person…with simple terms…..?

I’ve had a lot of probs with Vista Business on Vaio laptop since the beginning. Anyway, I noticed for the last week that I would be browsing sites and the cursor would get stuck and just sit there. I would have to re-boot and this continued to go on. Yesterday, it was happening every fifteen minutes. I tried to find solutions and nothing was working so decided to go back to a previous date and “System Restore”. It said that it could not restore it..here is what it said:

Root cause found:
Boot critical file: c:\windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe is corrupt.
Repair action: file repair
Result: failed. Error code 0×2

Also, it said that a “System Restore” Failed Error Code 0×17 and System File Integrity Check and repair failed Error Code 0×2.
——-
Fine. It said that it could not restart my computer automatically. So, I clicked finish and it shut down my computer. I rebooted and it brought me back to the same message. Before I could NOT get my Windows Vaio Explorer Page up and enter. Now, it is not even letting me get in at all——my Windows Vaio Log in page is gone. It keeps sending me to this System Recovery page which is a blue box on a black background.

When I tried another option on the menu it gave me these “System Recovery Options”—-Startup Repair (that has a little checkmark on it), System Restore (that didn’t work), Windows Complete Restore (what is this? Would I lose my files if I did this? Have no clue?) Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (Check your computer for memory hardware errors——we know the problem, right? The corrupted file (whatever that is) and don’t need this, right?) Command Prompt and Vaio Recovery Utility (What is this? Does anyone know? Can I use this to save my stuff? If so, I still need to get back on Explorer and not have a black page.) This is all that I am able to access.

Can I just get rid of that corrupted file? If I can’t even get back into Explorer or my main page…how do I do that?

Any, any, any….information would be most appreciated….and remember, I am not techno-literate.

I have a lot of graphics and don’t want to lose my files. Is there anyway that I can fix it myself? Did my hard drive just crash?
Can you explain what a “corrupt file” is and how I might have gotten it? (Gawd, I swear, I feel fairly stupid here. I would give up all my knowledge of the Romantic Poets for some techno-knowledge at the moment.)

Any information would be most appreciated….truly….madly..deeply.

aaaaaaarggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (me in frustration.)

First try startup repair, then come back and tell me what happened. Do NOT restore.

Thank you soooooooo much for responding as I sit looking at this black spot.

Top of the bar is marked “Startup Repair” and the message is “Windows cannot repair this automatically”. Then, it gives me the above View Diagnostic message (Boot etc as in original posting.) It then gives me the option to either “Click Finish” to shut down my computer or “View the Advanced Recovery Options” which are the above Five Recovery Options (in my original posting.) That’s it. If I click “Finish” it shuts down my computer and never gets me back to Explorer.

Hope this answers it….oh…but I did restore earlier (see above) which is how I found the corrupted file message.

I won’t restore now and will await further instructions. (Did that just sound like Mission Impossible?)

Thank you soooooooooooooooo much.

Signed,
Desperate

Try starting your computer, and before it boots, push whatever key or keys gets you into “Setup”. Then in setup, look for a way to boot once from the CD-ROM drive. Put your Windows Disk in the drive, let your machine boot from the disk, and when it asks you what you want to do, tell it “Repair”. From here you might try an earlier restore point, or retry some other repair options. The point is you will be working from the cleanest possible boot of the OS. If nothing works. try me again. I think it might, though.

Hey PD….

So….okay…..this is where Darling Rhad looks like a complete fool and in public…

Before I use your instructions….

Basically, this is what I see (without using your suggestions):

Black screen with Windows Loading Files across it..it then goes to “Startup Repair” then says it cannot repair it, okay? (That’s what comes up when I boot…without using any of your suggestions yet.)

Now, are you saying that while it says “Windows is loading files” I’m supposed to find a key on the keyboard that is Setup? Because there is no menu or any taskbar anywhere on the screen. It’s black until it goes into “Startup Repair” and that doesn’t have any options for Setup. If it is on the keyboard…which key would that be?

I don’t know where the disc is as I got this computer a long time ago and will have to figure out where I put it. Can I burn it from online if I can’t find it?

If and when I get the disc, should I put it into the CD drive BEFORE I turn the machine on, will THAT give me the Setup button/box?

If it means that I will need the disc, I will have to find it. That make take some time as it is four in the morning here already and I cried when my computer went blitz so…I’m really exhausted.

I figured answering other people’s questions while I waited for your answer was a good way to pass the time…and it cheered me up….as you did by helping me out….

So, I hope you will continue to answer my questions…even though I sound ridiculous.

Thank you x 1,000!

Okay…I’ll sleep….and I’ll check in later. Thanks again, PD.
