All sorts, it depends on the girl.
If you had to make a generalisation, though I wouldn’t recommend it, I’d say that girls probably like less violent games than boys. But there will always be girls who like violent games, and guys who don’t. You can’t really pinpoint what half of the population will like or dislike, as much as you want to.
Can you be a bit more specific in your question perhaps? Is there a particular girl that you want to buy a game for? Could you tell us a bit more about her or if there is another reason for your question?

The Sims. My girl is a Sims addict.

sumitrr1's avatar

my girl is not into computer gaming. ... i want to give her some game that would develop her interest. if i ask her what game would she like . she wouldn’t be interested. .. so i want to know .. what are the games that girls are interested in . Also my girl is interested in real board games .. so can you suggest some good board games.

shrubbery's avatar

Perhaps the Sims is a good suggestion then. Maybe the fact that it’s emulating real life rather than some fantasy world with lots of fighting will interest her. You could also try video games that are logical puzzles or adaptations of board games, maybe that’s a good way to test the waters with her. Buy a version of her already favourite board game on a video game. I’m pretty sure you can get computer versions of monopoly and stuff.

If she doesn’t go for those don’t force her to play. Find something to do together that you both enjoy, rather than one forcing the other to do something only they enjoy :)

Ones featuring My Little Ponies and the Grease soundtrack?

Sarcasm's avatar

You should probably just preorder her a copy of Left 4 Dead 2.
Chicks love zombies, right?

ParaParaYukiko's avatar

It does depend on the girl. In general, they’re not as interested in first-person shooters and things like that.

As for me, I love The Sims, but I also enjoy games such as the Final Fantasy series, the Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind, Oblivion), and arcade-style fighters (Tekken, Dead or Alive).

Likeradar's avatar

I’m a girl. I like Bejewled 2 and Zoo & Roller Coaster Tycoon. I’m also not really into games.
The kinds of games your girl would like depends on her interests and how much gore she likes, among other things. How about you bring her with you to pick one out?

This question is kind of like “What kind of foods do girls like?”

mrentropy's avatar

Pac-Man was a breakthrough game for the female population.

deni's avatar

ALRIGHT. I love Rollercoaster Tycoon. It’s so fun and simple and entertaining. For hours. Too many hours sometimes. Though I rareeely ever play it anymore. I used to like the Sims, but I don’t play that anymore either.

Does anyone remember Odell Down Under? Or Moles Quest? If so…I will be happy. I love them both and have not played either for over 10 years, except for a Moles Quest demo I found a few years ago. I got really excited.

Other than that I don’t like computer games.

rangerr's avatar

@Sarcasm I’m a girl. I love zombies and play Left 4 Dead and RE.
...and Starcraft.
I’m not a geek. I swear.

Likeradar's avatar

Ooh, just thought of something. Do they make old Mario-style games for the computer? Someone who’s not into games might enjoy the retro appeal, and she wouldn’t have to learn a whole new game.

evegrimm's avatar

Okay…I’m totally out of the norm here. Except for @rangerr!

I like: Diablo 2, Half-Life, Tomb Raider, and tower defense games (GemCraft!). (I’m sure there are are others I’m not thinking of.)

I’m super excited for Diablo 3 to come out, and plan to purchase a new computer to run it on.

And to show that I realy am a girl…I like Sweet Tooth 2, Bejeweled 2, Zuma, Alchemy, Atomica, Peggle, Word Whomp…lots of casual games, really.

rangerr's avatar

@Likeradar They are all available online.. and I’m pretty sure they have versions for the wii and ps2. Not sure about xbox.

Speaking of Mario.. let her try Mariokart.

My girlfriend loves anything Blizzard comes out with, She always kicks my ass in WoW, it’s really kind of a pain in the ass, she likes to talk smack.

troubleinharlem's avatar

I’ve found that a lot of girls like playing The Sims. I don’t know why – maybe it has something to do with taking care of people. Or pixels. I don’t know. xD

HGl3ee's avatar

I love anything Blizzard can come up with. World of Warcraft is my poison but I can’t contain my excitement for Diablo III !!! – LB

How about the oldie but goodie, MYST. it was groundbreaking in it’s dayand beauty is beauty regardless of age.

Try eBay or something as I can’t imagine it’s on any store shelves.

tedibear's avatar

Another fan of Diablo 2, here. (Although that expansion set kicked my butt for quite a while. Damn Bale!) And I’m thinking that a new PC will be in order to go with Diablo 3 when it comes out. This one couldn’t handle it.

I’ve been intrigued by The Sims, but am afraid it would consume me!

MissAnthrope's avatar

They’ve done studies on this very question. I’ll give you the abridged version of the results. There definitely are girls that love the first-person shooters and violent games, so much so that they pwn the guys they play with.

As a generality, though, girls tend to like the less violent games. Building and puzzle-like games are the most popular.

As for myself, I tend to not like the FPS games, they’re just too nerve-wracking, I’m not good at the controller, and it requires too much action and not enough thinking for my tastes. The one exception was Call of Duty 2, which I played to the end and have recently kind of wanted to play again. Games that I have played practically to the point of wearing out: Thief: Deadly Shadows, Rise of Nations (and x-pack), Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Diablo 2, Starcraft, and Warcraft. I like the Sims, but it only holds my interest for so long and eventually I get bored and never play it again.

clioi's avatar

I know several girls who are sims addicts and one who is into a game called Team Fortress 2.

I’m a girl and @Sarcasm is so, so right. L4D, L4D2 (I haven’t played it yet, but I’m sure it will be amazing and also I’m southern so I am biased towards it), TF2, BioShock and that one with the cake are my faves.

Has anyone brought up Alpha Centauri? It’s old, but damn it’s a time suck. I might have a no AC rule on my laptop right now.

Annnnd just like asking “what kind of games do guys like” this question is so broad the answers are almost pointless. Truly, it depends on the person, not the gender. You need to find a game that appeals to her. Figure out what she likes in board games and find computer games that mimic the underlying style of playing. But don’t take it too literally. For example: my family loves Monopoly. I can’t stand the computer game Monopoly. For us, the underlying enjoyment in Monopoly has nothing to do with the actual game as played by the rules—we have lots of family rules and under the table money going on. It’s just not as much fun transferred to the computer and within the official rules.

I’m a “girl”.

I like:
*Sims
*Tycoons (roller coaster, zoo-etc)
*Wii & Wii Fit

My husband & I had fun doing Myst & Riven when we were dating. We’d plan out a night of pizza or dinner in while computer gaming.

Personally, I like to “accomplish” something while having fun. So violence is not something I’ll partake in. I also enjoy doing things on Printmaster or the like.

Haleth's avatar

@clioi Team fortress 2 is awesome! I love it because it combines a fun battle system with a goofy sense of humor. They’re always coming out with free updates, even though they released the game a couple years ago.
I also like World of Warcraft, but I can’t play it lately because my roommates changed internet service and it’s too slow to run now.
I also like Black and White. You are a god, and you can do things to either gain the respect or fear of the natives of a tiny tropical island. It’s fun to sometimes drop stuff on them. I like Spore, too. I think it’s by the makers of the Sims, but you make your own species and then evolve them.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@sumitrr1 Maybe to develop her interest you could do something like my husband did w/me while we dated. Find a game you currently play on a board and do it on the computer. We did this with Clue & Monopoly. Then maybe get her into a gaming series you could do together.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

I don’t know about any other girls but I like the kind of games that guarantee there will be play time with me later. I don’t want to hear shite from a partner about being ‘tired’ when they’ve jacked off with the game controller all day/night, whatever. This was an issue in a relationship I once had (didn’t last very long) and I’ve been prickly about gaming ever since.

phoenyx's avatar

I did a paper on this back in my college days. iirc, girls tend to favor games with more developed plots and more character interactions, teamwork, etc (e.g. they wanted to know why they have to kill the monsters, an option to talk to people rather than just killing them on sight). Games that rated poorly: some dude you control goes through repetitive levels (shooting everything in sight), but where the baddies get harder each time. At the end some girl gets rescued. THE END

(of course, “girls” is a huge generalization)

Ansible1's avatar

Try something in the Civilization series. It’s strategic, you have control of a nation, you can be diplomatic with other nations, buy/sell/trade technology, and allows the player to choose between a war-like path or a peaceful path to victory.

Shuttle128's avatar

My girlfriend loves The Sims, just about any MMORPG, and most Adventure Company games (usually the mystery or paranormal themed ones). She does a lot of gaming on her DS though as well.

Fred931's avatar

@Ansible1, The odds are against a Civ series game being interesting to most girls. Those games go incredibly in-depth, especially newer ones.

JONESGH's avatar

My girl likes WoW, the Sims, and Diablo

Fred931's avatar

Try some Halo, pretty much everyone has played Halo. And it does have a developed plot, so don’t argue, @phoenyx.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Fred931 I would never play Halo…nope.

Ansible1's avatar

@Fred931 I recommended the Civ series b/c you’re able to choose to be peaceful or war-like….and as far as I know the Sims (which has been brought up several times in this thread) is pretty in depth as far as character development. Also, just because it’s “in-depth” means females will feel turned off by it?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Ansible1 I for one like the Sims because of the ability to design their homes/decorate.

Ansible1's avatar

@SpatzieLover I have no complaints about the Sims…I also would have recommended it to the OP if several people before me had not…I’m just confused at @Fred931‘s response, in depth games are a turn off for female gamers?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Ansible1 I meant to add, I was confused by @Fred931‘s response, too…couldn’t edit.

rooeytoo's avatar

I personally can waste a fair bit of time playing Snood. I know it’s sad, but it’s who I am! I downloaded Sims 3 and just can’t seem to get into it.

deni's avatar

@rooeytoo oh. my. god. SNOOD!!! one of the best games ever, but i haven’t played it in years. can you get it free or does it cost now

phoenyx's avatar

(I think you can play snood for free on facebook)

rooeytoo's avatar

@deni – I bought it quite a while ago, it was only a couple of dollars. I don’t know about Facebook.

I am pleased to know I am not the only one!!!
